Texas junior quarterback Vince Young plans to enter the NFL draft and forgo his final year of college, a close family friend said today. Young plans to make the announcement this afternoon at a press conference in Austin.
"He has the blessing of God, the pastor and his family," said Yolanda Lezine, Young's godmother and the family media's spokeswoman. "It's his decision. Everybody is going to support him a 110 percent."
Young capped off his career Wednesday night, rallying the Longhorns from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat two-time defending national champion Southern California, 41-38, in the Rose Bowl.
The Madison product will hire Bus Cook as his agent. Cook is also the agent for Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair, Young's mentor, and Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

I go to UT and have met Vince (at a party). Really nice guy, well-spoken.
He's only a (very light, ~ 6 hrs) semester away from graduating because, as you said, this is his 5th school year.
And his major is "Early Childhood through Grade 4 Certification", FYI
HOOKED 'EM!
You back in the game or staying home for a while ?
My point to you is that we need to improve the BCS so that teams get rewarded for testing themselves during the season. Currently, teams who haven't really beaten anyone, as long as they're one of the "sweetheart media darlings" such as Notre Dame, USC, and Ohio State get a free pass. The results from this year prove my point. Two teams with zero victories over anyone in the AP final top 25 were rewarded with a BCS bowl. Remember that your Buckeyes had not yet defeated the Irish, who are their only final AP top 25 victim.
Only a Buckeye fan would believe that OSU deserves it's number four final rank. You cannot back it up with accomplishment on the gridiron this year.
Too bad, that the NCAA doesn't force Notre Dame into a conference, perhaps the Big 11, and then force all large conferences to have a conference championship game like the Big 12, the SEC, and the ACC. This would help level the playing field. Another idea might be to rotate teams through the conferences, perhaps the top three teams from each conference would rotate to another conference for a year. Wouldn't that be fun to watch!
I arrived back in Baghdad a few days ago - so recently that I'm still shaking off the last of the jet lag.
I guess I just can't get enough. I'm going into my thrid year now. When I arrived at the airport here, it almost felt like I was coming home. How sick is that?? ;-)
So if your not in Iraq whats with the name?
He WAS in Iraq when he signed onto FR. He polled FReepers after he came home about changing his screen name.
Signed-
Allegra in Iraq ;-)
Thanks for the clarification, Sorry about your astros, woo hoo White Sox.
Grrrrrrr!
Seriously, we were just glad to finally GET to the World Series after 44 years of existence. Next year, we're going to expect more. ;-)
Congrats to the Sox. I know they waited a long time, too.
And Jevon Sneed. He looked pretty good in the Army All-American game. Rated 4th best dual-threat QB in the nation.
Thanks Vince for making our dream season come true. We all love you and will miss you. Show those critics that your the MAN in the NFL!
Vince was the first college QB to rush for 1000yrds. and pass for 3000yrds. in the same season. His potential as an NFL player is boundless.
Thanks, it was a long time coming for Sox fans. Stay safe.
The San Antonio Express News ran an article yesterday saying that VY consulted his Pastor before turning pro. In fact, he said right after the game (on Leno, maybe?) that he would have to talk to his family and his Pastor before deciding to leave school. Sounds like he's got his head on straight.
He's only a (very light, ~ 6 hrs) semester away from graduating because, as you said, this is his 5th school year. And his major is "Early Childhood through Grade 4 Certification", FYI
Cool. It's nice to see that he actually went to class while he was there -- that's an elementary ed degree, correct? Don't get me wrong -- I'm the last one to knock the value of an education, especially while one is on scholarship. I'm also the last one to complain about availing oneself of every opportunity. He'll make more in a week in the NFL than he'd make in ten years as a school teacher.
yeah, he does have his head screwed on straight. i heard today that his father is in prison for drugs, but that his mother and grandmother are God-fearing women and brought him up right.
A friend of mine waits at a restaurant here in Austin, and some of the football team (10-12 players) would go there every Thursday (I believe) before the home games this past semester. Vince was always there. One day, she waited on their table. She said that they would all be cutting up and talking about how great they are, the plays they've made, or how badly they're gonna whoop the next team they play, while Vince would sit there, smile and listen to them cut up, or start making small talk with someone at the table next to them. She said he didn't even talk about football every time she talked to him. My friend also noted that between the 11 (not including Vince), she got about $20 in tips. Vince called her over and asked "Hey, how much they give you?" and she told him "20-whatever dollars" and he shook his head, dug into his wallet and handed her a $50. Classy guy.
