In reality, Major John Andre was captured attempting to deliver communications between Benedict Arnold and Sir Henry Clinton as they negotiated the surrender of the vital fortress at West Point that controlled river traffic on the Hudson River. Andre was convicted in a court martial and hanged. Arnold escaped and died in ignominy in England.

But what if we weren't monitoring traffic with enemy agents outside the country? I think we'd have lost West Point, lost control of the Hudson, and probably lost the Revolutionary War.

I spent a week at West Point when my two cousins graduated. I do not remember the year, but Colin Powell was the speaker. We stayed in a hotel that is on the base, we lived under military law, not common law as in civilian areas. I have never seen so many drunk cadets sober up so fast when they passed MP's at gate to the base.

It is an impressive place, and as defensible as any piece of land I have ever seen. There was a chain that they used to block the Hudson; me, my father and my brother could not even move one link when we tried.

The war museums are fascinating, the place is worth a week to see.

There is a statue of a Polish General immediately at the entrance, http://www.usma.edu/Tour/

Ted Kennedy, believe it or not, got my cousins into West Point. One of them still serves today as a military surgeon, the other served in Iraq and has since honorably discharged from service to the republic.

Nice angle. I wouldn't have thought of that one. Of course they didn't have the nuances back then that they did today.

Thanks for the ping. Nuance wasn't what it is today in the eighteenth century, that's for sure.

When you see your cousins, convey our heartfelt thanks to them for their outstanding contributions to our country.

God bless them. God bless our military and veterans.

Brilliant piece of work. Always good to use the historical record to skewer the lib-Dems today. It all comes as such a surprise to them -- because they've never read, or conveniently forgotten, all the lessons of history. Send this out to Captain's Quarters, Instapundit, etc., to get it some play. It's that good, and that effective.
