The Atlanta History Center has obtained Civil War field orders handwritten by Union General William T. Sherman. The history center got the field orders in a deal that was clinched with the offer of a bundle of Confederate currency that was donated to the center. Of the documents, 50 are field orders written by Sherman and two are orders written by his aides. They join another 12 orders the Atlanta History Center already had.
"Sherman surrendered," said history center president Jim Bruns, who likes the idea of Sherman's orders returning to the city the general ordered burned down.
The orders are so valuable because they "show Sherman's intentions, the deliberateness of his movements," Bruns said. "They make it clear that he wasn't going to camp here, and he wasn't going to garrison the city. So he had to destroy the city."
The documents will go on display by next September, Bruns said.
The deal for the 52 field orders was aided by the contribution of a stash of about 3,000 Confederate States of America notes that were discovered decades ago by developer Dick Myrick. Myrick, who kept the notes in a briefcase for 33 years, decided last summer to donate them to the cause of acquiring Sherman's orders.
"It really was the Confederate currency that got it started," said Seth Kaller, the historic documents dealer who had Sherman's orders. "Dick's contribution was one of the first that was significant enough for us to know the Atlanta History Center was going to be able to acquire Sherman's orders."
i, for one, am not pleased with the hatred i'm getting by e-mail from creatures who are SUPPOSEDLY freepers. (i HOPE they really are NOT freepers. i would hate to think that they are.)
i have enough unpleasant things in my life w/o that.

Let's start the new spirit of these threads by having you remove your tagline.

Sorry. I thought we were talking about history, not opinions. If Shelby Foote's 30+ years of studying every scrap of documentation in existence on the Civil War doesn't influence your "opinion", then I guess we don't have much common ground for discussion.
So I leave you to your opinions, cowboyway --- and stand watie to his mental illness.
May God bless you and keep you safe, sir, and God bless the United States of America.
Don't believe him, Star. Watie's also told people that I've sent him these sorts of messages, but he won't put them up for all to see. That's because they don't exist. Of course, he won't apologize for libeling me, either.
You're getting "hatred" sent to you "by e-mail" over your comments in this thread? Why don't you post those "e-mails" you're supposedly receiving right here, for us all to see? I, for one, would be interested in viewing them to see what kind of mentality would waste it's time in such a furtive, futile endeavor...assuming they truly exist, of course.
Thanks.
This ain't about Sarge. This was a thread about Sherman, therefore, re. War Between the States.
Those who would wallow angrily
I would use the word passionately in place of angrily...but that's me.
and we have no Americans in harms way, I may become more interested in Civil War victimology
It appears to me that you have already spent far too much thought energy already. I am a bit surprised that you don't have the mental flexibility to ponder multiple issues, but that's not my concern.
I love history.
So do I. What I don't like is politicians revising history for political agendas.
A hundred and twenty years ago the greatest of all our Presidents delivered his second State of the Union Message in this chamber. "We cannot escape history," Abraham Lincoln warned. "We of this Congress and this Administration will be re membered in spite of ourselves." The "trial through which we pass will light us down in honor or dishonor to the latest generation."
Well, that President and that Congress did not fail the American people. Together, they weathered the storm and preserved the union. Let it be said of us that we, too did not fail; that we, too, worked together to bring America through difficult times. Let us so conduct ourselves that two centuries from now, another Congress and another President, meeting in this chamber as we're meeting, will speak of us with pride, saying that we met the test and preserved for them in their day the sacred flame of liberty this last, best hope of man on Earth.
-- Ronald Reagan , State of the Union Address -January 26, 1982
once before, a group of people from my church came to my defense about an incident that occurred in NYC to our "gospel octet".
ever since then, they ALL have gotten hate/obscene e-mails. (i will NEVER ask anyone to come to my defense again, no matter what is said to/about me.)
SADLY, i'm correct about this. i just HOPE that the people who claim to be FR folks are NOT! (if they are, we have some REALLY sick individuals on the forum.)

A most inspirational read.
GREATEST GENERAL of the Civil War. Made those incompetant Southrons his B-tch!
That's perhaps true, but that would also mean it's not true for 90% of them, and you're offending some of those people on this thread and at this forum. You've made your point.
That's why I asked you to remove it so these threads can be more civil. It's no longer a request.
Shermans excuse for rape, pillage and burn.
What we're no longer going to do is fight the Civil War on these threads. We're all Americans today. 9/11 should have taught us that, but WWI and WWII should have taught us that, too.
Feel free to discuss the war, battles, or the underlying reasons for the war. Feel free to discuss who should have won and why.
That's fine and perhaps we can all learn from the discussion. A better understanding of our history cannot help but be a good thing.
But the Civil War ended in this country and it's not going to continue on Free Republic. We're not going to have Yanks and Rebs flouting the forum rules, making this personal, continuing the war, etc.
Sorry if that ruins your fun. But it's going to be a lot more fun if we quit fighting and start having more intelligent discussions. I promise you.
Now, I'm outta here, but I'll be watching. Those of you who have trouble adjusting to the new rules are going on vacation. Hopefully, that's none of you.
Pulling it is an option. But I'm leaving it up so that people can see the new rules. It stops now.
I'm leaving this up as an example of what is wrong with the civil war discussions and how they are going to change.
Yes, there is plenty of trash on this thread. Look at it as an example of what won't be tolerated any longer.
Well said, point taken.
