Serenity: The Conservative Spaceship?
I watch the sci-fi movie Serenity today and I would have to say that the underlining theme of the movie was very conservative (or at least libertarian). I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same way while watching the movie Serenity? I know it is also a tv show but I have only seen it once.
It was a good movie.
It was, in my opinion, the best sci-fi movie to come out in years. It even beat the Star Wars movies, in so far as it will be watched over and over again.
I do recommend that anyone who liked the movie also purchase the "Firefly" tv series. It is the prelude to the movie, essentially, and funny... very funny.
And the Star Wars movies haven't been/won't be?
I liked Firefly when it was called Farscape.
I know B7 influenced both Firefly and Farscape, but thought Farscape was far better in terms of production and characters.
There's no similarity between Firefly and Farscape.
I'll be watching Serenity more often than I'll be watching Star Wars. The old Star Wars series I can watch over and over again. The new ones, I'm lucky if I feel moved to see them more than once a year.
No reason to feel slighted if you happen to prefer Star Wars.
I liked Firefly when it was called Farscape.>>>>
Firely was never called Farscape.
Of course there is. Anyone whose seen both can see the similarities. I guess Serenity coming out after Farscape would make Serenity's fan's a bit touchy on that... ;)
Serenity is a tiny niche movie, and while fans like yourself will rewatch it, it's a bit silly for most people. The whole space cowboy thing wore thing rapidly. The chick kicking ass in the trailer had the audience I saw the trailer with laughing. More Joss Whedon silliness.
Revenge of the Sith was a terrific flick, while the previous two are kiddie movies which, not surprisingly, younger generations enjoy as much as I liked the originals.
There's a large difference in the story line, motivations, and situation. Even the characters are very different.
There's also the fact that Firefly was only on for one season. The two different series are very dissimilar. Both are fun to watch though.
I'm not saying that Star Wars was bad. I saw each in the theater and later on DVD. Probably seen each episode twice. I've seen the older movies a lot more though, and love to rewatch them. The new ones are a bit heavy on the eye candy and lack the in depth characterization that I like in my entertainment.
I agree. Lucas felt he needed to kill the worth of his entire Star Wars franchise to attack Bush in episode 3 ruined everything for me.
However I do feel that the characters do need to be developed more. They are a bit cartoonish but it works.
When the fans wanted a "closer" it messed things up big time.
John forced all of the warring civilizations to live in peace. Ugh, I didn't like it. Farscape went looney.
Firefly never had that problem since it was cancelled so early. I do share your amusement with Joss's love of tiny chicks kicking ass everywhere but Firefly is a good show and I don't think they can be compared.
My two cents anyway.

The period the show was on has nothing to do with the similarities in content.
The new Star Wars flicks are eye candy overload. Lucas is obsessed with creating a world, and forgot that what made the original worlds so interesting was that they were grittily believable, and peopled by characters we enjoyed; an environment becomse real only when we believe the people in it.
Farscape went looney, but it HAD to, it always went looney. The show broke out of the Star Trek and even Buffy straight and narrow predictability. The problem is when you go that route, the show will eventually go in a direction some fans will dislike. It's the risk one takes with going into original areas.
Firefly's length of run isn't a factor in my comparing them.
But it's all just discussion, anyway--it's cool that people are finding something to enjoy. I wish I could...sniff... ;)
I really don't think it is that obvious. There are a limited number of archetypes and plots.
It is just as likely that Whedon based Firefly/Serenity on Hans Solo and the Millennium Falcon. In fact there's more in common between "A New Hope" and the Firefly series than between Farscape and Firefly.
I haven't seen Serenity yet but it seems OK.
What about Battlestar Galactica? I thought I would hate it but it is not bad. It's an interesting remake of the original in any case.
I have Netflix so I can get the sci-fi I want without having to rely on modern TV. I love sci-fi but the genre is sub-par when it comes to good shows.
What do you like?
I loved Blake's 7. They use to show it here a long time ago on the local pbs station. Any idea if it's on DVD anywhere?
Amazon in the UK has the series (3 of em) on DVD. Couldn't find it on Amazon US.
What's amazing to me is that Whedon does such a good job in portraying a point of view that he doesn't personally share. As he put it in an interview at the beginning of the series
"Mal's politics are very reactionary and 'Big government is bad' and 'Don't interfere with my life,"' Whedon explains. "And sometimes he's wrong -- because sometimes the Alliance is America, this beautiful shining light of democracy. But sometimes the Alliance is America in Vietnam: we have a lot of petty politics, we are way out of our league and we have no right to control these people. And yet! Sometimes the Alliance is America in Nazi Germany. And Mal can't see that, because he was a Vietnamese."
