The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Oh, God Bless them, Ruthy. That's one of a parent's worst fears.

Thanks everyone.

I can't imagine what his family is going through.

~sigh~ I'm gonna get these girls bathed and in bed. BRB.

My radishes sprouted!

Omigoodness that's great! You've inspired me - I might go prep some beds this weekend. Our weather has been vey mild, too. Peas might do well. They like the cold.

BTW - Remember when we thought the drain field had failed last year? and how we had perk holes dug for a new drain field last summer? How the county inspected the perk holes and decided we had a high water table and that the landlord needed to put in a several thousand-dollar fancy engineered system? Well, we let the idea die... I interceded and told the landlord that since we had only had trouble when the drain field was fairly overloaded (washer draining at the same time as a full bathtub) and that we hadn't had trouble since we'd been more careful, they decided to let the whole thing sit for awhile if we were OK with that. I'm more than willing, the county was being ridiculous. Well, after 25 consecutive days of fairly heavy rain, here's the amount of water in the perk hole:

You couldn't fill that hole with water with a hose.

Actually that's wrong, now that I think about it. So much for silly rules with precious little science-- that's more like it.

Here's a look at what the Virginia Capitol building currently looks like:

The Virginia State Capitol Restoration and Extension Project

This is the normal view:

That whole front lawn and the steps (there's a picture of Flat Frodo on the steps) are currently gone. They're adding an entrance from the street level below that goes up under that hill to the Capitol.

The place looks like a war zone. The new Governor will be Inaugurated in Williamsburg for the first time in over 200 years. The General Assembly isn't even meeting there this year.

I was so inspired that I spent the whole afternoon planting turnips! I planted 135 more turnips. That's 15 square feet, 9 per square foot.

Oh my achin' back! LOL Lord only knows what I'll do with all those turnips!

Lord only knows what I'll do with all those turnips!

Can the boys have a roadside stand at your house where y'all could sell veggies, or make arrangements with a local market to provide them with turnips? Let the boys weeds the plants and it could be a money maker for them!

Hmmm! That's a thought.

Who knows...they may not even grow. They're not supposed to be planted until the beginning of March, but I'm hoping with it being so mild and with the row covers...maybe they'll sprout! They're pretty hardy, once they sprout.

Yes, I like 'em! And I'm sure Joshua will and Steve probably will.

I like both the greens and the actual turnips!

Whew! Finally got the kids settled in.

They did manage to break a flower pot which held a lovely silk topiary (centerpiece from a cousin's wedding).

At least we can always go out and buy another pot since the arrangement itself was not damaged.

Speaking of which, Hair's bouquet is still in one piece. :-D
