The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah, Mom said she wanted all the stuff down today though because the kids are starting back to school soon. I thought we could leave things up until after I was gone, but noooo.

Here's an interesting article...

http://www.channeloklahoma.com/news/5828578/detail.html

Perhaps I'll see my Black Hawk guys...

The Incident Command Center is located at the Expo center in Shawnee and that is where I'll be working. The article even mentions the Disaster Relief workers.

Usually I fix a meal, but we always end up eating so much in the way of appetizers that no one has room for a meal. So this year it's appetizers and desserts. I'm making a Crab Dip, Jumbo Shrimp and swiss cheese stuffed in Jalopeno Peppers, wrapped in Prosciutto, and broiled, and tiny meatballs baked in a gingery soy sauce. One of the gals is bringing some Salmon caviar, and another is bringing some veggies and dip. For Dessert, I'm buying a cheesecake sampler at BJ's, making a Chocolate Schmear cake, and a King Cake. In addition, I'll make some Marshmallow Kreme fudge, Fruitcake cookies and Chocolate-Cherry Cookies.

Think we'll have enough to eat? ;o)

The Twelfth Night party is to celebrate the end of the Christmas Season and the beginning of the MARDI GRAS season. That's why I'm making a King Cake!

Is the King Cake on account of it being Ephiphany?

Probably a foolish question...but I'm good at those. ;-) Only way to learn, right?

...Apparently now I'm "mean" and was "attacking" the bizness dude. Saw more post on that thread and couldn't resist reading. Why calling me a "FReminist" (a term I still find amusing) doesn't qualify as an attack is probably only clear in his own little mind.

I'd like to know, too. I remember reading about King Cakes for Epiphany in books. However, my friend from the New Orleans area had a King Cake shipped to him for Mardi Gras last year. So I'm confused...

Check out the history of the King Cake

About 10 yrs ago I ordered some little plastic babies (an alternative to coins or beans) to put in my King Cakes. I couldn't order just one; I had to get a whole bag of 144! I won't live long enough to make enough King Cakes to use them all!

Interesting...thanks for the lesson!

So...what's *your* tradition for the person who finds the baby? Do they get to be king or queen of the party, or how does that work?
