The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I tell ya, that sourdough starter is just bubbling away like crazy now. I don't know that I've had one develop that quickly before. Later today I'm going to add enough flour and water to make another cup, and if it looks like it's going good tomorrow, I'll make flapjacks for breakfast!

I killed it.

It's been snowing all morning here. Since I don't have to go anywhere - shouldn't go anywhere, really, since there's nothing I should spend money on - it's vey nice. Pretty to watch!

Sorry to hear about that moron upstairs. Call every day that he acts up and just say you want to add to his "record".

We got our tree. It's in place and lighted. Waiting for ornamentation later.

Sounds like a good day for baking, while watching the snow fall! Next week looks like gorgeous weather here; highs in the low to mid 30's. The next snow is expected around Christmas Eve! WooHoo!

Clare had her first solo drive this afternoon. We sent her and Joseph to the public works area to dump the cardboard boxes we'd been collecting with shipments of Christmas gifts ordered in the last couple of weeks. She said it felt wierd to be driving SirKit's van, Brego, the older red Ford Windstar, instead of Shadowfax, the newer silver Chrysler, which is what she's used to driving.

Took me awhile to get used to driving alone. It's an odd feeling!

I'm trying to think what baking I could start in on. I want to make a coupla different kinds of cookies...but I suppose some keep better than others. I can definitely start springerle tonight and get that baked - it's actually *better* after a week or more.

Do you have room in the freezer to keep some cookies until you get ready to ship them?

A little. But I always worry about whether things will thaw OK, without condensation affecting them.

It's an option, though!

Talked to the manager just now. She's gonna call the guy in(or guys...I think maybe there's another now) and just have a quick chat about the rules here.

I really hope that doesn't come back to haunt me.

Meanwhile, I'm feeling totally paranoid about how loud my own music and TV thingies are. It's pretty easy to be a lousy neighbor. I really have to wonder just how loud the music is in his apartment...at this point I'm almost listening for it because I'm dreading it starting up again. Maybe it's not as loud as I think. *sigh*

But in any case, she said when I called last night, I should have been given the option to page the on-call maintenance guy. The person I spoke with was at the switchboard they route calls to after hours, and should have told me I could either have him paged OR call the police if I preferred. So I did OK. And if it happens again, I guess that's what I'll do.

I just hate this whole thing. Hopefully they just don't realize they're being loud and once they've had the chat, they'll be more considerate (if somewhat embarrassed).

Evening (almost) Overtaxed: Came back from ~ town ~ a pint low, with T-shirts and coffee cup. LSA got her coffee cup last time. Four donations in a year, you get 'mugged'.

KMBZ had a 'wellness' table set up there and they were giving away stuff. The movie passes were for Giesha so we passed; then they had 'down load a song' cards again no sale (he suggested giving them to the grandkids - sigh). So we got a magnet and imparted some sage advice on programming (get Boortz and move Laura Ingram's time slot and oh, dump O'Rielly) we'll see how soon our suggestions are implemented. :-)

Evenin' all. Just got in from my *one* day of Christmas shopping. It's all finished! (except for the wrapping and the baking...)

I came out of it with tired feet but otherwise good spirits. I said, "Merry Christmas!" to every clerk. Most looked very startled but each and everyone said, "Thank you - Merry Christmas to you, too."

Heh...not much going on here. Did some cleaning and some computer stuff. Cleaned and disinfected Miss Cat's pet taxi. Now I've got to peel some taters for chowder and settle in to listen to the game tonight.

Did I tell you about my spaghetti squash? A couple of weeks ago I split one to bake in the oven and found some seeds that were sprouting. I put three of them in dirt and so far two have come up. Wonder if I can keep them in good enough shape for transplanting in the spring.

Good evening!

Well...latest is that the apartment complex manager talked to the guy...AND his Dad. Apparently this is the guy's first apartment and Daddy co-signed on the lease. I imagine he wasn't pleased to get a call not much more than two weeks later. Probably gave the guy a slightly different lecture than the one he got from the manager. That'll leave a mark...

Looking forward to blissful slumbers tonight! Woot!

And I have "Shadow of a Doubt" to watch later. Would say "Mmm...Joseph Cotton...", but considering he plays a strangler, I dunno that that's appropriate...

Steve donated platelets yesterday and will be going with me to donate blood after I return from Louisiana. It does make me feel a bit run down afterward, so I want to wait till I get home.

Steve's job loaned me a pair of steel-toed rubber boots and some very heavy duty rubber work gloves. I've got several new pairs of jeans (new to me, from the thrift store), and a new twin-sized air bed. Got my sleeping bag all aired out and re-packed.

I'm almost set for my trip! With the holidays coming up, time will fly and I don't want to be caught rushing to get things together at the last minute.

Evening Rosie - well, things are looking up. Glad to hear it. Hope the 'lecture' works out satisfactorily for you and Jen.

Heh...just figures that with my luck he'd wait until Jen left to be TRULY noisy. But hopefully that's over.

Just made me feel really bad. I hate getting people in trouble.

I'm fixin' to have some Tension Tamer tea - I need it!

You must have a green thumb.

Heh....either that or I let my spaghetti squash sit in the fridge too long.

I hate getting people in trouble.

You didn't get him in trouble, he got HIMSELF in trouble by being an inconsiderate little snot; Daddy probably co-signed the lease to get him out of the house. The kid has to learn to live in an civilized manner, Rosie. You just were an instrument of his learning :) LSA

Heh...well, here's hoping.

I just know I'm probably oversensitive when it comes to loud and profane music. I never did the college dorm thing.

Mmm...Tension Tamer.
