Catholic League president Bill Donohue remarked today about last nights episode of South Park (it will run again for the next three nights):
A South Park character gets a DWI and is ordered to attend AA meetings. Told about the 12-step program, he concludes that he needs a miracle to cure him. The plot then focuses on a statue of the Virgin Mary who is bleeding out her ass. The Vatican dispatches a cardinal to investigate and he is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue. He then declares this to be a miracle, which draws even more people. The alcoholic, now in a wheelchair, is also sprayed with blood: he then claims he is cured and jumps out of his seat.
Pope Benedict XVI goes to investigate. He, too, is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue. A reporter says, The pope investigated further and determined that the statue was not bleeding out its ass, but its vagina. To which the pope replies: A chick bleeding out her vagina is no miracle. Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time.
Comedy Central is a subsidiary of MTV, which is owned by Viacom. On the board of directors of Viacom is a practicing Catholic and a distinguished public servant, Joseph A. Califano; he served under Presidents Johnson and Carter. We are writing to him today requesting that he intervene in this matter. We want a) an apology to Roman Catholics and b) a pledge that this episode be permanently retired and not be made available on DVD. In the event Viacom does not cooperate, we are asking Mr. Califano to issue his own statement of condemnation. We are asking our members to contact him as well. Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself.
Joseph A. Califano is chairman of the board of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. He can be reached at CASA, 633 Third Avenue, NY, NY 10017; phone, 212-841-5200; fax, 212-956-8020; email, employment@casacolumbia.org.
I'm a Christian. We don't act that way. The Bible forbids it. Why don't you try reading it sometime?
You are so wrong I don't even know where to start. Catholics do not "worship" Mary. Do you worship the Bible? If so, is it the original Greek, Latin, Hebrew or the King James "translation" designed to support the English schism. Were you there when Mary lost her virginity? I have not seen an episode which made fun of Jesus or mocked God. Which were they? properly I turned this episode off, it was not funny and was gratuitously cruel in many of its minor points. No Roman Catholic worships Mary.
The reality is that there are somethings that people will kill for. If you were to see a child killed before your eyes, or even see something you cherish destroyed before your eyes, you would DO something. If a Muslim were to see the pages of a Koran depicted as toilet paper, then he would DO something. Given what he believes the Koran to be, it would be far worse than Mapplethorpes puting a crucifix in a jar of urine and calling it art.
I hate hippies! I mean, the way they always talk about "protectin' the earth" and then drive around in cars that get poor gas mileage and wear those stupid bracelets - I hate 'em! I wanna kick 'em in the nuts!
Hippies... they wanna save the world, but all they do is smoke pot and smell bad.
There is a thread about "Corpus Christi", which unlike South Park demands to be taken seriously and is by the "intelligentsia" who embrace all that is homosexual.
They're not people, they're hippies!
Thanks for your view of history, which is very hippyish. but IF Jesus is divine and Mary is the mother of Jesus, then she is the Mother of God. This si the argument behind the term. As a matter of fact. there was at the time an argument by a prelate named Nestorius who said that the mother of Jesus was noit necessarily the Mother of God, because she was only the mother of his human nature. Mother is God is, therefore, a shibboleth of the opposing camp--the orthodox trinitarian camp.
The reality is it's a cartoon and Muslims are nuts.
The reality is that symbols matter.
They must have gone to the Don Ricketts School of Ettiquite. LOL!
That statue of the Virgin Mary in that cartoon should not matter to you.
And if Parker and Stone were mocking the Vegan Mary, there'd be far less outrage.
Nonsense. Which of the steps says that?
Did you see the Osama Bin Laden episode?
Ding ding ding! We have a winner!
That's what AA and other 12 step organizations always say, you said it yourself:
The alcoholic who just stops drinking -- South Park's simplistic "solution" to Stan Marsh's imaginary problem -- is just a dry drunk, a relapse waiting to happen. For the solution to be permanent and effective, there are 11 more steps to go through,
According to 12 steppers 12 step is the only way.
Not sure what is more funny, the show itself or all the drama queen indignation.
Its a great show, if you don't like it, don't watch it. Donahue is a putz, an embarassment to Catholics.
Only a pagan would care if statues cry mystical tears.
I find it very amusing how people can actually be angered over a cartoon. A cartoon.
