A couple of packs of firecrackers tossed under the porch and I bet old grumpy would have come roaring out.

Why can't they just tranquilize the bear and remove it? Take him to a place where he could be placed so he could hibernate as nature intended????????? To leave him there is an endangerment to everyone around and he is only doing what comes natural. So, tranquilize him and move him and all are happy.

This whole thing is New Jersey's fault.
Because of the population explosion in north west Jersey, and lack of hunting pressure, the bear pop went through the roof, forcing many of them across the river.
For the first time in memory, PA has an expanded bear season in that management area.
They are even seeing bears as far south as Bucks, Montgomery and even some sightings in Philly!!

Before anyone does anything drastic, we should confer with the bear and see what his intentions are.

And here I thought it bad that a female skunk - with babies, no less - had taken up residence under our backyard deck here in the northern Chicago suburbs.

He is not hibernating, he is hiding there during bear hunting season. Sissy bear.

When I was at Penn State, we had a bear come scootin' across campus...
Darn thing went up a tree just outside the TV room of my dorm...
They had to shoot it with a tranquilizer and haul it off...
I read about it in the campus newspaper the next day...
But I figured I must've been just inside where it happened,
watching Hawaii Five-O or Night Gallery or some such show.

If the bear doesn't snore louder than I do, it wouldn't be a problem.

a black bear wandered into the pasture by pats parents place.
the cows must have been a bit much for the bear who sought
safety from the beasts in a tree.

As a practical remedy, a handful of mothballs thrown under the porch will encourage the bear to leave and not come back.

Over 4,000 black bears including around 17 that weighed over 600 lbs were taken in the just concluded Pennsylvania bear hunt. 159 were taken in our 400 square mile county (Pike) - on the NY/NJ border.

Is there a pond nearby? If so wait until it freezes, cut a hole in the ice, open a can of peas, spread the peas around it.
When the bear comes out to take a pea, run over and kick him in the ice hole.

I have had between 1-3 400 lb. black bears in my back yard every day for the last 3 weeks. Drives my Doberman nuts.
