Two Litters Of Legless Puppies Born

SAN DIEGO -- Animal control officers in Hollister, Calif., are a little worried after they received two litters of puppies in the last couple of weeks that show signs of what they consider inbreeding.

Some of the puppies were born with no front legs.

But one little pup doesn't seem to mind at all. She was seen playing with her mom like any other healthy, happy puppy.

With a tail that was constantly wagging, the happy little camper chased her momma and even leaped across the cage onto her momma.

This story has a very happy ending for all the puppies involved. They have all been adopted.

Better yet would be a block w/many ball bearings. Then she could move any direction easily, doing turns on her rear.

Why is inbreeding - even true pure - the likeliest culprit? Maybe just you mean severe inbreeding such as generations of siblings or such. (I like how they assume that in the BRIEF news clip on this too. NOT. ;-) )

But regular inbreeding contrary to conventional wisdom does not produce defects like this any more than any other. AKC nuts have been doing it for years and you don't see legless and headless dogs running about all the time.

Fact is weird things often just happen, and it could be something went wrong even w/the fetus (or pile of cells).

"I adopted a Rhodesian Ridgeback who was born without a ridge because the breeder wanted euthanasia"

Huh? Oh.....

You adopted....because of threat of euthanasia!

I thought he was born w/o a ridge because the breeder wanted to euthanize himself....but that didn't quite make sense either! ;-D

OK I'll try to clear it up for you. The 'evil' breeder wanted to kill the defective (no ridge) pup, the 'good' vet (dog doctor) called his 'big hearted' sister (Ditter) and said "Ditter, do you want a ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback?" To which I (the big hearted sister) said "sure" as I had done many times in the past. Then we all lived happily for 13 years. Good story?

I really was thinking the same thing. Alot of people think all problems in dogs are the result of inbreeding. This is simply not the case. Had I had a litter like this I would have first thought of something in the environment.

"Every time I see a three legged dog I call him Lucky."

One Christmas morning about 10 years ago we heard our two Labs making a fuss. I went to see what the problem was and there, in the -5 degree Christmas morning, standing in about a foot of snow was a three-legged Golden Retriever.

I brought him up on the porch, gave him dog buscuits when he inhaled and called the cops with his tag number. They ran the tag and gave me an address about 1/2 mile away. I walked him home and he hopped a bit but made good time. When I got him to his house, his owners, a couple in their late 70's perhaps, welcomed "Luke" home. I asked "Luke?"

"Well" said the man, "It's actually Lucky but we changed it when he lost his leg"

The poor baby has rubbed the fur off his chest from scooting around. I'd name him/her "Seal".

That is an idea I should have considered; this may be the result of an accident. Chemicals do spill and maybe later the dam of these puppies chose that as her place to lay outside or chewed up stuff that was contaminated. I certainly live in a house where that might happen. The guy that used to live here sprayed everything with chemicals. He could have spilled some..I wouldn't know.
