President Bush took part in the annual lighting of the National Christmas tree last night, but failed to mention by name Jesus Christ, whose birth millions celebrate in the U.S. and around the world.
"Christmas is a time to rejoice, and to give thanks for the blessings of the season and for the blessings that surround us every day of the year," said Bush, flanked by the first lady, as well as members of Congress and the Cabinet.
The president made a brief allusion to Jesus, but crafted it into a joke which got mild response.
"Each year, we gather here to celebrate the season of hope and joy and to remember the story of one humble life that lifted the sights of humanity. Santa, thanks for coming. Glad you made it. I know you've got a lot of commitments this time of year. By the way, we have a lot of chimneys at the White House if you're looking for something to do."

Just leave your helper under my tree, Santa. Oh, and please call 911 for me, a few blocks down the street.
Please tell me this post was written with your IronyMeter pinging at 100.
Unbelievable that so many are unable to understand and interpret an account of what took place. The account was poorly written, but I can easily see that the President made mention of Christ first, then acknowledged the prescence of a 'Santa' at the event with a silly joke for the kids in attendance. People are looking to be offended and looking foolish in the process.
emiller is a 2-month old sign up on FR. That fact that he/she refuses to acknowledge first-person accounts from FReepers who were at the ceremony indicates that this person is not only disingenuous but also dishonest. As I pointed out earlier, the made-up headline indicates a DUmmie troll.
He is, and he opens cabinet meetings with prayer.
"A lot of us used to thank God that Bush was elected and was in charge. Now, I'm thinking it was a horrible mistake.
"
Bull manure! I do believe you're here to stir the pot and see what floats to the the top. It appears to me, however, that your messages are the floaters in this case.
"...inhabitants present on what is now the North and South American continents prior to Europeans arriving."
They did NOT forge the United States of America. Christian Europeans did.
"Each year, we gather here to celebrate the season of hope and joy and to remember the story of one humble life that lifted the sights of humanity."
Then, the President looks over at Merlin Olsen and says...
"Santa, thanks for coming. Glad you made it. I know you've got a lot of commitments this time of year. By the way, we have a lot of chimneys at the White House if you're looking for something to do."
i didn't hear it, so i was just going on what i saw written.
Sorry, but at no time in the speach did he mention Christ. Yes, he said the word Christmas....but he DID NOT say Christ or Jesus. Nope, sure didn't. So, was he afraid to give due credit to the reason for the season? Yup...sure was.
I recall WND complaining last year there weren't enough mangers in the W.H.
They are pathetic.
And so is anyone that tries to spread this garbage the President is anti-Christian and anti-Christ.
Yes! I watched it. It was a definite change of subject, and there was a Santa Claus standing right there, to whom he addressed the remarks with a grin and a twinkle in his eye.
My Gosh, I wish people would not be so quick to think the worse. It as all completely innocent!
So, I didn't say that the inhabitants prior to the Christian European founded the USA, did I? :-D
Neither did I
Same.
Yes it is..........
Talking about Christmas with mentioned Jesus is like talking about the presidency in the 80's and not mentioning Reagan or Bush.
