Second Thoughts - 11-30-05
By: William W. Lawrence 11/29/2005 Email to a friend Voice your opinion Printer-friendly Inky Regular readers of this column are almost certainly familiar with our Ink, who was The Press mascot until she died and went to Rainbow Bridge earlier this month. Inky Dog was a well-mannered pooch who never over-ate and who always conducted herself as a lady. She behaved as if she were the queen. That's the way she was treated. Those of you who have gone through the ordeal of losing a beloved pet will understand the gloom that enveloped our house. I promised myself that I would never have another dog. I did not want to go through such an ordeal again. Then, while reading our sister paper, the Daily Times on Nov. 17, I came across the popular "Pet of the Week" feature which describes pets up for adoption at the Delaware County SPCA. The article included a picture of "Pee Wee." Wow! I thought I was looking at a picture of Ink.

I have made a promise to myself as well. I have promised myself that unless I am incapacitated by old age or illness, I will ever be dogless. I won't have just one dog either, if I am able to have more I will. My dogs bring so much happiness into my life, why should I not have them, lots of them?

He's adorable and it sounds like he has a big personality in that little body. congratulations!

I just spit the coffee out. Poor little Pee Wee. He will probably never trust me again. But getting neutered was an SPCA adoption requirement.
The folks at our SPCA were really super nice. If you ever want a pet visit your local one.

It only takes seconds to fall in love with one, and they do fill a void.

That's funny. I had a pooch named Dit over in Germany. She was the company mascot and I think everybody at our station was mad at me when I brought Ditter back to the states. She couldn't handle Philadelphia traffic though and was run over by a trolley car. I paid a small fortune back then to send her home by air while I came home on the troopship General Sturgis and was seasick every inch of the way.

My dog Shelley says "Bark! Bark!" to PeeWee, although she is brown not black, big not little, and Lab not Schipperke.

Ink is very cute.
You guys need each other.
All of my girls have been adopted orphans. Never regretted it even though my heart has been repeatedly broken.
Great grief is a sign of great love. Never regret love.

I understand your sorrow . . . and your joy!
The help me deal with the loss of a pet is that I would much rather out-live them than vice versa. I can't stand the thought of my dog spending the rest of his life waiting for me to come home.

What a little doll. I know how you felt. I lost my beloved Golden Retriever/Lab cross, Skippy, just months after my husband died in 2001. Skippy had been my best friend and companion (other than my husband) for 6 1/2 years. Losing him was just about the last straw. I vowed I would not get another dog. I still had my late husband's elderly sheltie who is now 17. But my kids intervened and got me a "puppy." Malamute/Siberian Husky/Lab cross. Harm has become the love of my life and a joy.
May you and Pee Wee have many happy years together.

I have a set of keys to Flyers home because if something happens to him I will take care of his dog.
Just how cool is that?!!!
Of course I just go over there and drink his beer and have pizza delivered on his dog's credit card.
I am not a nice guy, he is.
His dog has a pretty high limit too!
