Yup. Yet another mere coincidence involving pit bulls attacking children.

Wow, we haven't had a "all 'pit bulls' must die" thread in a long time.
About time.

Reminds me of escaped murderers and Muslims. Quite a similarity. (Well, not ALL Muslims)

This is called a "frenzy". Dogs in a group, any kind of dog, is susceptible to this phenomenon.
People who own dangerous dogs should understand it. It is not a joke. When people hear of dogs "turning on the owner" this is usually the case. It is not uncommon for dogs in a frenzied state to attack each other as well.
No should own more than one large dog unless they fully understand what they have in their possession.
I rescue and turn around abused Dobermans. I refuse to place a Dob with an inexperienced owner. I tell the ones I do work with to always, always remember that what you have is a loaded double barreled shotgun, on four paws, with a mind of its own.
Only fools reject that advice.
This should never have happened.

when the dogs' owner tried to stop them, the dogs turned on him and bit off his thumb
I feel so bad.

There's no such thing as a 'pit bull'. There is no such breed recognized by any kennel club on the planet.
Now having said that, not only the dogs but the owner should have been shot.

I predict the day will come when owning a dog will be something only the very rich will be able to afford. Here's the list of what the insurance companies are now considering "dangerous breeds": Pit Bulls, Rottweillers, German Shepherds, Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Doberman Pinchers, Chow Chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards, and Akitas. Perhaps the list has grown since I owned a dog and tried to get homeowner's insurance.

".....police shot and killed [the] dogs...." If they would have used rubber bullets instead of real ones, the dog's rampage would have eventually burned itself out. We must strive to understand the underlying causes of their anger. Can't we learn anything from the French?

The owners of pit bulls should be held strictly liable for what the dogs do. Haveing a pit pull on your front stoop is the same as leaving a loaded gun on your front stoop.

I'm not against banning the breed, but I'm for hammering the owners first. Massive fines, automatic jail time and total liability to those injured in the event of an attack and steep home and renter insurance premiums. Most don't own a home outright and must have insurance to get a mortgage. Go after the landlords as well. Make these dogs so expensive to own that no one wants one. Go after the breeders as well. Make neutering mandatory for licensing. If these measures don't stop the attacks, then ban the breed.

My daughter has a pit bull who is the sweetest dog imaginable. He is a big baby, affectionate, gentle, and well behaved. Because they have a reputation for being vicious, my daughter probably over disciplined him when he was a pup if he displayed any aggressive behavior. He is neutered, also, which probably helps to tone down the aggressiveness.
I think the owner must have bred these dogs to fight. That does happen frequently, and when the dogs go off, the results are ugly.
