They're in Oklahoma.
1996, someone let one loose in our training barracks.
It scratched the daylights out of our freshly waxed floor.

Er...since I'm not an "average out-of-stater" I can't answer that. I don't really start to move until the temp is in the 100's...

That sounds great!!
When we got to the Canyon, we went to the South Rim and were so bummed by the sheer number of people. MAJOR disappointment. We asked the rangers and they kept directing us to this campground or that one.
On our way out of the park, we saw this Ranger station ALMOST hidden in the woods. We decided to give it one last shot. There was a femal Ranger there who could tell we were serious about not wanting to camp in a campground with the rest of the world. She pulled out a fire road map which we bought for 10 bucks and showed us EXACTLY where we wanted to go and pointed out several interesting views. I believe the place we set up camp was called "Fire Point." We pitched our tent LITERALLY 10 feet from the edge. It was cold as anything (<40 degrees) at night. LOL
If we hadn't happened into that one Ranger the whole trip would have been a HUGE disappointment.

Olympus Mons is quite near that rift, is it not?
a 40 mile tall volcano whose base would cover Nebraska... THAT I gotta see.

Should've seen the look on the DrillSars face the next morning.
He'd watched us wax the floor.
And in he walks and the floor looks like someone dragged chains over it.

Yeah, it's to the left in that picture.
I've got a crater picked out for us to nestle our Flying Castle into after we get there.
It'll be just like we settled down into Lake Fate again, only drier, ... and colder!

have you factored in the presence of subsurface water ice, and the possible results of flash-heating it with our thrusters in a low pressure environment?

Olympus Mons is on the Tharsus Plateau, north and west of Mariner Valley. Looks like about 600km away.

Oh, we're not going to get stuck. The exhaust gases will be on the outslope of the small crater.
If we're lucky, we might be able to tap into some volatiles for propulsion and replenishment.
We'll have to be careful about any water we get from there. Who knows what kind of critters might be lurking in it?
We'll let Darksheare drink the first glass.
