Need Advice ~ Army Reserves
October 8, 2005 | Jemian

Posted on 10/08/2005 3:50:46 PM PDT by Jemian

My son, also a freeper, just completed his BASIC and AIT training. He returned home Thursday night at 2200. He is supposed to report to his Reserve Unit within 72 hours.

But no one has been at his unit. JT's gone over there, telephoned and left call back numbers on the answering machine. He is worried about not making contact and being considered AWOL.

Has anyone ever experienced this? What is the usual plan of action?

At present he's planning to keep phoning through Monday, but not travel back there until Tuesday. It takes a little over an hour to get to his unit and doesn't want to spend the gas unless someone will be there.

Vietnamese refugee Nguyn Nhi, left, is welcomed by Ronnie Guyer at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005.

Sixteen years of waiting for new home finally ended today for 229 Vietnamese refugees, who left Manila on a chartered flight for Los Angeles to join relatives resettled tin the United States. Liarliar post: "I have been coming in here with multiple IP's over and over again. You cannot restrict free speech no matter how much you may want to. Even if you "ZOT" me I will keep coming back and back and back. Not only that, but why are you deleting these free thoughts? Are you afraid of what might happen to people like you if people are allowed to think freely? You are sort of like a Nazi!"

SCRAM, Liarliar!!

Thank you all for your advice. I passsed them on to JT and he handled it. He kept in phone contact all weekend and Tuesday made an appointment to report to someone. He went down to Montgomery. Whoops! Wrong someone. But that wrong someone told him he understood JT's unit had been deployed to east Africa and JT may have to catch up with them. More on that later.

So, he called again this morning and set up an appointment to meet with the right someone. He went down there today. Nothing was said about the 72 hour thing and JT didn't bring it up. He found out his unit isn't deployed. (Yea! He can go back to college now. I know, he may be deployed in the future, but not for right now.) His next drill is the weekend of November 4.

He went down in his BDUs as he was ordered at FLW. The person he reported to asked him why he was in uniform. He could have gone down in civilian clothes. That was told him yesterday by the person outside his unit. After thinking about it, however, JT decided to err on the side of caution. It's not wrong to wear BDUs but it could be wrong to wear civilian clothes.

The real good news is that JT has been an E2 since June 1, so he's getting back pay. His signing bonus is being processed now and that will be coming to him soon. He also has been promoted to E3 and that means a raise in salary. Good for him. Shoot, his pay is so good, I might just enlist. Not really.

Anyway, that is the JT update. He will be staying stateside for the nonce. Again, thank you all for your advice.

Good news. JT will learn very quickly that things aren't as organized in the USAR as they were while he was active. BTW, out of curiousity, what is his MOS?

He didn't even report to an officer. It was a civilian desk-jockey! His MOS is 21J, General Construction Equipment Operator. He operated SEE trucks, augers, and other medium to heavy equpiment. He told us the unit is combat well-digging.

We laughed and made jokes about fightingin a well.
