Top 7 Smells (vanity)
PA Times | 9/14/05 | Dr. Pissant

Researchers have long realized that our sense of smell contributes greatly to our overall satisfaction or disatisfaction with foods. It has also been established that smells can trigger memories, good or bad, of events long ago.

Here at the Pissant Research Center, we've now compiled the definitive list of smells that improve our moods and make getting out of bed each morning that much easier!

Top 7 Pleasurable Smells

1. Baked Pies:--It does not matter weather its apple, blueberry, or pumpkin. It triggers an instant drool reaction

2. Chocolate Chip Cookies:--Self evident

3. A Good Hoppy Beer:--The combination of the sweet smelling malt and the flowery hops...makes me want to crack one right now!!

4. A Woman's Perspiration:--Not the 3 days without a shower smell, rather the smell of a clean, lightly perfumed woman who is sweating for the best of reasons

5. Gasoline:--There's a reason why many people get brain damage from huffing. Plus it reminds us of sunny days mowing the lawn

6. Fresh Mowed Grass:--Often follows the smell of gasoline and the preceeds the smell of a Good Hoppy Beer

7. Pipe Tobacco:--Everyone had a relative that smoked a pipe, and in light concentrations, the stuff smells good enough to eat.

This one is interesting to me....
I am going to ask hubby tonight about it

THE PERFECT MATCH
I have a smell joke from the James Herriott stories. There was a big old dog that his owner brought regularly to the veterinarian's office. The dog had a terrible flatulence problem that, incidentally, smelled horrible. The vet could barely stand to treat the dog, but the owner seemed oblivious to the stinky smells emanating from the mutt. One day, the vet (Herriott) made a house call to see the dog (that was in the old days in England). There was a vase of flowers on the dining table and the stinky dog was lying in the corner, farting profusely as usual. Herriott treated the dog, and as he was leaving he walked over and smelled the flowers on the table and commented on how wonderful they smelled. The dog's owner answered, "Well sir, I wouldn't know meself since I lost me sense of smell many long years ago."

Oh, and speaking of "match", a good cheap air freshener is simply to strike a match and let it burn for a few seconds, then blow it out. It covers odors very well, as does a window raised about an inch for a little while to allow fresh air into the room.

I've used matches as air freshner for many, many years but have you noticed that they're getting harder to find? Seems like ever since those handheld butane grill/candle lighters have come on the market matches are becoming obsolete.

Huge bummer. I know I've seen it and admired it. I grew roses for a few years, and just loved doing so; look forward to having a rose garden again.

but I love the smell of hot asphalt. And no, I don't know why.

Not crazy...I like the smell of a meat locker and a smokehouse, thanks to my Grandfathers.

Whoa, now we're getting to the nitty gritty.

Anything is better than patchouli [barf].

Closest thing they offer now is called 'Moon Shadow'.
Though a place called Star Nurseries offers Blue Girl under license.

Though the best quality Blue Girl was from J&P.

Dr. Pissant,

I believe you open yourself to criticism insofaras you discrimminate against a set of olefactory stimuli which are deemed not pleasant. Much more fun could be had by asking the freepers to collate those sensations.

I hate patchouli and any strong heavy perfume. My list of odors I don't like is way too long.....

"we run a few miles after work and I always wondered what attracted the gnats and the hubby"

There is a difference between the "working in the yard all afternoon" or the "no shower since night before last" aromas and the natural scent that is noticeable following some mild exertion.

One Granddad was a butcher from Ohio, the other was a farmer from Mississippi. Both of those smells remind me of them and tons of good childhood memories.
