After seeing how society crumbled in New Orleans recently, I realized that I need a basic home-defense firearm, and I'm pretty well decided on a shotgun. I'd like you FReepers' recommendations on a model. (Don't worry, I'm already resolved that the first place it'll go is to a 10-hour safety class with me. Got a well-reputed teaching facility all picked out.)
If it matters, I live in greater LA.
I'm about as macho and gun-totin' a guy as Captain Kangaroo, but these last seveal days have brought home to me that it is my RESPONSIBILITY as the head of a household to be able to protect my home and family in times of dire crisis, where the law is unavailable.
I hope I never need to use it, but I need to be ready: After the holidays, I'm adding a shotgun to my emergency kit.
Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.
Or any shotgun in good condition and at a bargain price at a pawnshop. I've found some er, uh, steals there.
But after what everyone saw on TV this weekend you might want to ge there before everyone else does.
For me, I'm always BLOATed.
I have a Remingtion 870 Express Super Mag. Got it for like $300 new and its pretty nice for trap.
Whatever it is, make sure it's a pump action.
The sound of that getting worked is pretty recognizable, even in a darkened house. It will probably scare off an intruder without you having to get blood on your carpet and holes in your walls.
BTTT
Keep plenty of ammo...the first thing that will be banned is ammo sales in the City of Los Angeles, and Burbank and Glendale will run out.
Both are inexpensive, have good parts support and are very reliable.
Then buy lots of ammo and practice!
Anything with an extended magazine and an 18" barrel.
I have a Winchester 1300 Defender, which is the only home defense model that I could find in 20-gauge.
Mossberg makes a nice defense model, but 12 -gauge only.
Like they said, a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 pump action. If this is strictly for home defense, then go looking for the Mossberg with a pistol grip and extended tube. Also don't forget to get about a half dozen boxes of #5 birdshot and at least 50 rounds of 00 (double ought) buckshot. Keep the ammo in a cool dry place and it will last at least 75 years years.
If you're in a wet environment, Remington makes an 870 in marine varnish.
In addition to a shotgun I would also suggest having a 22 caliber rifle &/or handgun with several multi-shot clips. The ammunition is cheap, but will serve the purpose. You can buy a brick of 22 shells (qty.=500) for $15 bucks or so. That's a lot of rounds if you need it to fend off the marauding bands of looters. There's other advantages too, but I'll leave it at that.
I agree with reply number 3...a Remington Model 870 pump gun with a short (approx. 20 inches) barrel cannot be beat. Recommended loads are 00 or #1 buckshot. Most reliable, and can be used more effectively by a novice.
Mine is the short barreled, extended magazine variety in a satin nickel finish (fairly low maintenance).
Semper Fi,
This is my current favorite:
Yes, that is a 12 gauge AK shotgun. And that is a detachable mag. 5 or 8 round mags, 20 round drum "any day now".
Absolutely right, my FRiend. Great sound when you are the one making it.
Nice indeed...How much did that run you?
Cool!
