Would You Leave Your Pet?
9/6/05 | Vanity

Posted on 09/06/2005 2:42:24 PM PDT by maxwellp

Watching the news on Hurrican Katrina, I've seen a few people who refused to leave their dogs because they could not bring them along to a people shelter. I thought about it and asked my husband if he would leave our two cats to fend for themselves. My husband thought about it and said "If we had young children, we would have to go and leave the cats. Well we don't have young children so I would not abandon the cats." I agreed with him. Pets are like members of your family. I simply couldn't walk out the door and leave them. Any comments from other Freepers?

I couldn't and I wouldn't. No how, no way. Could YOU leave these babies?

I would leave my ex-wife behind (and it would be great if I could her mother with her)...but not my cats.

I know people who got their dog out in a cooler - a big one - it floated too. I've added an empty cooler to my pile of emergency supplies. Cat carriers, dog flotation and empty cooler incase cats need to be floated.

What fine pupsters.

A hurriciane came to jacksonville,FL a few years back. I loaded up my pupster Lola and off we drove to friends in Atlanta. A normal 5 hour trip took us 18 hours. Even though the hurriciane turned out to be uneventful, I had no regrets. If there is an evacuation warning..Lola and I leave. I won't wait cause neither she nor I want to go to a shelter. Having a pupster gives you the aded incentive to be prepared and take responsibility....after all, you have a dependent.

I would be haunted and terribly upset if I had to do that. With the advance warnings we have now hopefully I could get out in time to drive away with my dog. Some cities/areas now have shelters that will accept a pet as long as you have a carrier for them. If any of you here are interested that would be a good thing to lobby yours to provide. Maybe after this they will.

I would hope that I would never be faced with such a decision.

I would never leave her to suffer.

Mr Trust and I are very cautious people. We'd have been out of the hurricane zone by 6 o'clock Saturday AM, WITH our two grown children AND our two cats. There would be no police officer or soldier telling me I couldn't take them.

Thanks. Like many here on the forum do, we call our dogs the furkids. But they earn their keep. We would evacuate, if we lived in a hurricane prone area, EARLY!

Several times, due to tornado warnings, I've had to go alone into the basement storm shelter. Having Tinker and Bebe with me, to protect me from the snakes and other critters--they're invaluable.

Hey, dogs are people too, (they just have no arms and twice as many legs)!

I think I would do whatever it takes to make sure my four-legged daughter, Brenda, got out safely, or else! I feel for those who were forced to abandon their pets.

If it were a choice between a human or my cats, I'd have to choose the human, of course. But most of the time that choice doesn't have to be made, if you think ahead. Pillowcases work great for emergency carriers for cats, if you don't have time to dig the carriers out of the closet. Just pop the pillowcase over the cat, flip it upside down and tie the top, and there you are! (Um, when you reach your destination, you might want to let the cat calm down a bit before opening up the pillowcase! :)

If it were humanly possible, the cats would go with us.

I would not leave my cat behind. She would go in the pet taxi and come with me. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I left her behind.

I have also heard doggies and kitties called " Little persons in fur coats".

After the behavior we saw in the NO superdome, our dogs and cats would behave MUCH better! My pupster Lola does not rape, loot or shoot humans or other animals....and she would be great comfort and protection for me. I would rather have more animals in the shelter and less of some "humans".

No, I wouldn't. But having said that, if there was even a suggestion of evacuation in my region, I'd be one of the first out, WITH the dog.

I'd stay with my dog till the bitter end.

If it were a choice between a human or my cats, I'd have to choose the human, of course.

It depends on the human. I'd rescue an animal-loving stranger before my pets.

But if the stranger was a dog-hater or a cat-hater, I'd have to rescue my pets first.
