Would You Leave Your Pet?
9/6/05 | Vanity

Posted on 09/06/2005 2:42:24 PM PDT by maxwellp

Watching the news on Hurrican Katrina, I've seen a few people who refused to leave their dogs because they could not bring them along to a people shelter. I thought about it and asked my husband if he would leave our two cats to fend for themselves. My husband thought about it and said "If we had young children, we would have to go and leave the cats. Well we don't have young children so I would not abandon the cats." I agreed with him. Pets are like members of your family. I simply couldn't walk out the door and leave them. Any comments from other Freepers?

I would not leave my dog, old as he is, unless given no choice. We love that dog as part of our family and it would tear me apart to leave him.

If it were just me, I would probably stay with him however, I would not risk another (human) family member's life for him.

Seen enough of both cases. No, I would not leave the dogs. I would not turn them loose if I were forced to leave without them. If I could not take them, I would put them down.

First, it's just a plain given that you cannot take your pet to a shelter. You just can't do it, for sanitary and other reasons.

Second, if you've got the means of getting out of town, then the pet can come along -- but you can't plan on staying in a shelter in the evac location.

If you don't have a way to get out of town, and you have a choice between staying in a dangerous place and going to a shelter, the question boils down to whether you'd sacrifice your life to keep your pet company.

No way, no how! My Sammy would come with us or we would stay with him. (10 yr. old cocker spaniel, a real sweetie)

He sleeps in our bed!

I can't imagine being in a situation so ill-prepared for a natural disaster I was warned about for several days, but if so, they could survive outside and I'd come back for them ASAP. Animals can drink gross water and eat gross things, we can't. People first, pets later.

No I wouldn't. Either they come with me or I'd stay.

As much as it would pain me, I'd do the same.

Nope. The lot of us would have bugged out together, meowing all the way. We'd have made sure of it.

My cat has been a great comforter in times of trouble. And I watched last week with some uneasiness as I know many here feel the animals are secondary. I am haunted by the boy who had his dog taken away from and was so distressed by it that he vomited. Of all the horrors that little boy experienced, it will be having that dog forcibly taken away from him.

I looked at my precious companion and thought about what I would do. I decided I would never be caught short should an evacuation call come or other disaster. The cat goes with me, she has her own 'go bag.' Complete with cat food, kitty litter and box, and her own gallon jug of water, collar w/tag, and leash (she's trained to be on it), along with a carrier, and cat tent.

Perhaps one of the most difficult choices to make. If you and your pet were in a situation where only one could be rescued and the other would face certain death, what would you do?

I would find another way to get both of them out of there, even if I have to trade spots with one of them. I can always find another way out.

No. I wouldn't stick around waiting for disaster either. Check my page and see the kids.

"Would You Leave Your Pet?"

Yes, to save my children and/or my husband I would leave my dog Isis and cat Siren.

If I had no husband or children then I'm not sure what I would do, but I suspect self presavation would take over.

I do feel for these folks though because I too love my pets, and would feel their lose forever.

If forced to evacuate, we'd probably take Mrs Heatseeker's 4 cats. We'd have to - otherwise they'd just break out and start rioting and looting and I'd get sued.
