Would You Leave Your Pet?
9/6/05 | Vanity

Posted on 09/06/2005 2:42:24 PM PDT by maxwellp

Watching the news on Hurrican Katrina, I've seen a few people who refused to leave their dogs because they could not bring them along to a people shelter. I thought about it and asked my husband if he would leave our two cats to fend for themselves. My husband thought about it and said "If we had young children, we would have to go and leave the cats. Well we don't have young children so I would not abandon the cats." I agreed with him. Pets are like members of your family. I simply couldn't walk out the door and leave them. Any comments from other Freepers?

Hmmmmm, I wonder what my little dog would say to these assinine ignoramouses.

Let's see...we went and picked her up at the humane society. She was in a nice enough area but she was sitting alone in the corner with her paws folded over each other. She looked up at us with such beautiful brown loving eyes. We walked around thre times to view the dogs and her and then we asked for the visit. They brought her in and we said hello to her in a nice voice and she immediately came over and put her head in my lap. She would not move her head. We decided to take her home.

Hubby was so surprised as we had not discussed agetting another dog. Today, that dog is is shadow, sticks to him like velcro, sits beside him, loves him as she loves all of us. She has a beautiful huge yard to run around (which she does) has a spot she uses to look out over her domain, chases the birds (which provides her LOTS of exercise) sits on the deck in the sun or the shade...her choice. Has a big, thick padded bed in the living room with a comforter for her to lay on. Has a big crate in a big utility room with padded comfortors for her to lay in at nigh. She has the best food and always fresh water and very special treats after she eats her dinner in the evening. She even has a small radio with classical music to keep her company.

She has a sister that loves her to death. She has the total run of the house except when we go out or at bedtime. She knows bedtime and goes right into her own area. She greets us in the morning like we have been gone for a million years. She gets a small cookie from daddy and one from mommy to start her day. She loves to go to the pond when we tell her it is time to feed the fish.

Everyone loves her. She is gentle, kind, loving and sweet as sweet can be.

My question to Peta: If they think dogs living with owners is demeaning....I know one helluva bunch of dogs who would just love to be demeaned. Thank God for all the people who love animals and are good to them by CARING for their needs and not letting them run loose to be victims to larger animals.

Peta is nothing but a bunch of losers with nothing in their lives that is constructive. I would consider PETA as the PREDATORS ... they are the ones who do harm to the animals. As for letting dogs out of their cages at showings...they had better be careful doing that. We have a friend who shows his dogs and if that happend to him...Peta would be in for one helluva time...and...they could take that to the bank.

So many people throw animals away if they are not immediately perfect.

I have a cat that is now blind and 20 years old. I moved 4 times with him...which upsets some cats as they find it hard to adjust sometimes. But--he urinated on a wall in a spare room in my one house...and again in another house...It was because I had the litter box there at one time...and he thought it was ok. I was moving litter boxes to different spots....that's a NO-NO. I ended up having the drywall replaced....in both homes because of it. I was really really upset with him....but I didn't take the easy route and turn him in or put him to sleep....nothing is perfect...especially an animal that I adopted for LIFE....so--I bought a big cage---put him in it for almost 6 months...right next to where I 'permanently' decided to leave the litter boxes.....and I only let him out when I was home to watch him. He was about 13 years old at that time---and I successfully re-trained him. He has never urinated anywhere else since..... Took some time and money--but that's called "RESPONSIBILITY".

For many reasons, I would not go to a shelter. (I refuse to be an unarmed victim.) But live in a car with my little ones, sure. Of course, I have enough means in order to do get away.

I don't think any of my family would leave their pets.

If you don't have a way to get out of town, and you have a choice between staying in a dangerous place and going to a shelter, the question boils down to whether you'd sacrifice your life to keep your pet company.

This assumes that a shelter is not a dangerous place...

We have a few tornado warnings each year. Every time the siren goes off, we all head to the basement--family members and pets alike.Uh huh. The cats are loose in the basement, but I have a metal dog crate down there permanently. The last serious tornado warning, I had a rescue foster dog. While 3 dogs were cramped in the crate, they survived with minimal stress. And the tornado passed by safely.

If nothing else, the NO events have made me very cognizant of the needs of a canine and feline go-bag.

They refused to accept my son as part of the household, despite following all the "cat" advice from neighbors and friends, including sleeping on his unused blankets and such so that he would carry my scent, "introducing" them to him and his environment, etc.

How terribly stressful it must have been for every creature in the household. Unfortunately, some animals refuse to accept new members into the household. I can't fault you for doing the right thing.

Get a dog. Dogs never pull stuff like that.

Unfortunately, that is not true. And dogs can cause a great deal more hurt quickly.

I would take my dogs since I would not be getting on the gov't bus. If I had to leave the dogs I would put them down rather than turn them loose or leave them for someone else to kill and eat. I would not put them to sleep; I would put a bullet in their brains.

I have a thirteen year old boy who has gone deaf. Some people, based on what others tell them, would get rid of him just because of his hearing, because I have small children. Theory is, cats like Sam can be startled easily, and might hurt a child. For some people, just having someone say, "Well, this might happen . . ." is enough for them to get rid of an animal.

Such as, you shouldn't have cats around babies. Why? I have seen many, many people take a kitty, and dogs too, to the pound because they were going to have a baby. Friggin idiots.

Sam has had many urinary tract infections. The only way I know is if he pees outside of his box. Yes it's a pain in the butt to have animals. They take time, work, you have to educate yourself, things don't stay as clean, etc.

But for me, it's a trade off for the incredible joy I get simply from them being around.

I would do ANYTHING for my animals.

Frankly, you have a lot of nerve in what you've posted to this woman. Never mind the nerve of many here as well.

I emphasize the last paragraph as fitting for this thread.

That cat looks like he is up to no good! Like he's going to sneak up pull the tail of the dog on the left.

But no way I leave these creatures, who have shown such devotion to me and my wife, to be scared to death, and to possibly starve or die of dehydration.

Yes, I agree. Doing something to a loved pet as was done to Terry Schaivo is absolutely criminal.

Dogs need to know who the alpha dog in the household is. It's tougher, but still do-able for a woman. Judith Anne - there are a lot of techniques that women can do that don't involve a strong show of force. A lot revolve around how the momma dog treats her pups, and other is constant training.

That said, there's a difference between dominant dogs/alpha wanna-bees versus aggressive dogs. Some dogs just cannot be trusted and are a real danger, IMO.

If you had to evacuate for a hurricane and didn't take your pets...you'd put them to sleep???? Christ.

No. I would kill them so they wouldn't have to suffer through a hurricane and the resulting aftermath and pestilence. Last result only if there was no way in hell I could bring them with me.

You appear to be suggesting that pets should take priority over the health and well-being of your children. If you actually believe this inane philosophy, I seriously pray to God you never have kids.

Not only are you correct about the discipline thing, but I have NEVER seen a cat pee on something unless there was an underlying medical problem.

Sorry, they do urinate and may even mark for non-medical reasons.

if I have to get on a bus the dog is coming with me.

In that circumstance the situation is not in your control any longer. As a temporary ward of the state, the state will make the rules.

I have two black, domestic short hair cats. One is sleek and slender, very much a kind and loving cat. The other is fat and greedy but gets by on his cute looks. I also have a daughter and another daughter on the way.

I would leave both cats behind in an instant if my family was in danger. I imagine I would miss them and I know my wife miss them very much. She has a greater connection to them. I think I would miss the fat one most because, even though he is in many ways a jerk, he is just so darn plump and cuddly. When he dies (probably more than a decade from now) it would be nice to have him turned into a pillow. My wife doesn't agree.
