Shepherd Smith: Disappearing Journalist, or Hero?
Vanity

Posted on 09/05/2005 5:40:25 PM PDT by ventana

I watched Fox News over the last few days. I don't have tv, as of recently, at my own home. Self-editing in order to get to all those books that never get read when TV is a click away. Daughter needs a break from the easy entertainment, too. Been there, done that before; and read a lot! But, anyway, I was on vacation at the Beach with TV, and glad for it.

The news had us riveted to the monitor. The chaos was cataclysmic. What was happening? Were welfare blacks going mad? Where was the Governor? Was the government ignoring the plight of those in New Orleans? Was Bush in touch? What was wrong with the Mayor of New Orleans? How many people were affected? What was happening, what were they going through, what could be done? This was what was going through our minds. And we wanted to know: who could we trust to get us the real story?

Amidst all this Shep was great. He was human in the way he put a human face on what we were watching. He was a journalist. He had class. He may be possibly responsible for actually moving the rescue mission forward by hours if not days. We felt his palapable anger and frustration as he stood on the bridge stating, then grumbling, then lamenting, then bewailing the lack of action. He was a voice in the abandonment. He spoke to us, for us, and , most importantly, for them. His impassioned pleas and description, his true balance in the face of two sided finger pointing--wherein he explained that there WAS bad behavior, but there WAS ALSO a lack of response to human need that, he hinted, insiniuated a note of complacency, a complacency that might not have charitable origins, got everyone's attention.

Shep did yeomans work. He continued to point out that Aid was promised and Aid was not arriving. He put a human face on a catastrophe. He allowed his emotions to work in front of the camera for the good of his fellow man, knowing, I believe, full well he was compromising his Journalistic position as a professional above the fray. He did it to save lives. He is a hero.

Shep Smith should win a Pulitzer, and I hope he does.

There were times when I thought he was great and other times I wanted to slap him. He was there thru the whole thing so I'm gonna give him leeway.

Shep's regular show on Fox, is the only one on Fox that I WON'T watch. Too much like E-Entertainment TV.

I shook my head in shame, the entire time he and Whorealdo were on for a couple of days.

I think he was just overwhelmed at the end. He had been watching all that misery for days, and the city and state had no control and no one told the people where to go, I would have made a fool of myself too I think.

"V's wife."

You posted an entire vanity, instead of a comment, using your husband's account?

I'd say you owe ventana big-time.

:) LOL! Very little sun, not enough booze!!! But he is operating on a different generational level. How old are you?

Try this, go back and re-read, if you haven't already-and I will guess you have as you are an old timere here whose screen name is very familiar to me, anyway, to read the Drudge speech to the Washington Press corps in 1998. It's a whole new game and the styles and everything are different. Gone is the Dan Rather, Tom Bokaw, lockjawed Ralph Lauren talking head. To survive today you have to be EMO (as my 16 year old would say) to a degree because you are speaking to people who are now used to citizen reporters. It's just a whole new news gathering world with different conventions. IMHO V's wife.

I like Shep. He was there in the French Quarter telling us that NOLA had dodged another bullet - before the levee breached. After that all hell broke out and Shep witnessed it - I think he got stressed out and it was understandable. I'm ready to cut him some slack.

Besides, Shep is a fan of the Yankees.

Always a wild array of opinion here.

Shep is a drama queen, no doubt about that and this time, he felt to his bone marrow, the pain he was reporting upon. It upped his ante, as it were.

I think he has a great heart, did a much needed job of demonstrating the NEED and DESPARATION of those who suffered something most of us will never fully understand so I agree with you. Of course, if he is a DEM, lol, he is missing a bit in the mental department. At any rate....

BRAVO! Takes grit to make a post like yours around this Ship bashing crowd! hehe
