Looking for advice on a gun for self defense in the case of roaming gangs of looters.
personal notes | Sep 2, 2005 | putupjob

I see from New Orleans that when the social order breaks down, we are responsible for our own defense. I am planning on getting a firearm with the correct training that will be stashed away in a crawl space, never to be used unless a dire situation arises. The scum looters can come for me, that's fine, but I am going out in a blaze of glory.

I am seeking advice on what I should get. A handgun, a rifle? I'm sure there are big time gunners on freep and I could use some solid advice. Thanks.

You are probably going to be inundated, with advice. I would recommend a 9mm Bereta, hand gun. I own no weapons, I have shot one of those. It was very accurate, it made alot of noise, but did not kick at all. I was knocking off cans at 75 yards.

Gee, thanks guys. Your advice is awesome and I appreciate it. I knew the freepers would now.

Never, ever let them take away our right to protect ourselves.

If you're not going to practice, practice, practice I suggest a shotgun, pump action in 12 ga.

I further suggest you practice, practice, practice. And mind the crawl space, if the temperature varies a lot during the year, condensation will turn your shotgun into recyclable steel

Right kind of gun, but use squirrel shot. Hit will hit more of a mob at once and make them think about their actions.

""I am planning on getting a firearm with the correct training that will be stashed away in a crawl space, never to be used unless a dire situation arises.

It won't be much use to you if a "dire situation" arises and you go looking for a firearm that's been rusting away in a crawlspace that you have never used before.

Quite honestly, whatever firearm you get should not stay in your crawl space. You need to fire it periodically. Take it to the range once in awhile, so you get used to firing it and using it. Your weapon, of all devices, needs to be something with which you are very familiar, both so you can use it safely and can use it effectively.

While I'm not going to put down a good handgun and I think you should one, I do believe you should be able to protect yourself from folks who are armed with a rifle. I'm not going to advise you which one to purchase, but it should be one with a high enough caliber to be accurate and lethal at 100 yards.

This would not be advisable at any time other than during a riot when someone is firing on you or trying to torch or enter your dwelling. The rules are a little different under those conditions (not literally, but with some vague understanding IMO). Don't think that you will get a free pass, if you do defend yourself. You might not.

The handgun would cover you in the event of an intruder. I would recomment hollow point ammo as it might be less likely to exit your home and enter another. It also has good stopping power.

Others will give you great ideas on which exact weapons to buy.

"In general, however, you do have the right idea - be prepared to protect yourself."

Good point that just buying a gun is not enough. Practice and somehow coming up with a mindset that "Any stranger in my house gets killed" is important. And target identification. A friend of mine had his gun pointed at the bedroom door as it opened when his wife came in late at night returning from a trip a day early.

I agree with plenty of practice, even with a shotgun. Most people do not realize how easy it is to miss a target using a shotgun.

I would think a 12 Gage pump action shot gun would work fine up close, filled with slugs.Long range use a 9 mm glock with a 12 hollow points that should do. Make sure you have plenty of ammo.Good luck & happy shooting.

Nothing quite gets the attention of a thug like the sound of pumping a 12 gauge shotgun.
