The idea came up this a.m. that maybe since there is going to be a huge problem involving rescue and temporary housing of the homeless from the Katrina hurricane in the Gulf that maybe cruise ships could be used. And the S.S. Hope might be used for those who undoubtedly will need medical care.
But I doubt a Commercial Cruise Line would put up with the stealing and destruction most of the refugees would do.
That said, why aren't they airdropping water and food to the people in the Superdome?

Lack of passenger trains in the area, much less sufficent numbers of passenger trains for the job, I'd guess. . .
You stayed up much too late. ;-)
I won't lose any sleep over an opinion by an apologist like you. Criminals are criminals and all your attempts to deflect that will not work.
That's a good question. I mean, the gov't already pays Amtrak to operate, and they have a station in NO. Of course, all that's monday morning quarterbacking at this point.
move along
we don't need your inane comments
we have a very serious problem and whether you "lose any sleep" is definitely not one of the problems.
So, what could they carry-off that no one would notice?
and your suggestion for solving the problem is???
Superdome only had supplies to last for X people, Y days. The number of refugees at the Superdome has increased exponentially. Gotta take care of them, until they can be evacuated.
Pardon me for misreading your post. They ARE airdropping to the Superdome, as I've read.
I think the problem is when people are describing what they have seen ON TV. I mean, we all know that news coverage would *never* focus on the worst case scenario, right? The news media just LOVES covering the story of the 400,000+ evacuees who are NOT looting, don't they? Couldn't it possibly be that the people looting are the minority and that's why they're the ones who made their way onto your TV screen? C'mon now - you're on FReep - surely you recognize the games played by the media, right?? Right????
The ships will avoid the Louisiana ports like the plague, you'd better believe.
Cruise ships are not designed to be hospital ships, anyhow. To be used as lodgings for the homeless will invite trashing beyond repair plus lawsuits for no reason.
If there are some unbooked ships, the U.S. government could lease them and indemify the owners. But I wouldn't hold my breath on this happening.
And that's the way it is (sadly).

I like the idea, as long as the cruise ship company lends the rooms out. There was a DUmmie thread yesterday where they wanted to comandeer the cruise ships. You could just feel the greed and anti-capitalism.
But, also, someone on CU brought up the point of whether there was a suitable dock left to get people on the ships.
"Just a thought. I don't know how feasible this might be but it sure would be a temporary solution for the thousands of homeless in the Gulf."
I used to be the weekend guy in a homeless shelter in Nashville. We had room for four families in the house I was assigned to and it was a real problem to control some of these people. I can't imagine what it would be like to control a couple of thousand. The difference in the occupants will depend on whether they were gainfully employed and provided their own himes before the disaster or whether they were the professional welfare types.
The welfare types don't seem to have many beneficial social skills for the most part and really do have a sense of privilege. They seem to think it's ok to take anything they want and are puzzled when they get punished for it.
This is way above our respective pay grades. :-)
Not if they are foreign-flagged.
Garbage scow would be more appropropriate.
I was wondering how long before the navy sent her down. My wife is a former crewmember on her, and we were discussing that point last night.
On the bright side, many who might otherwise insist on staying put, might be encouraged to leave NO. For a chance to be on a Liner. Or for pure psychologic reasons -- to put the horror behind them for a bit.
