~The Dragon Flies' Lair~Thread~XXII
August 28, 2005 | bentfeather/The Poets of the Lair

My Dragon Fly and Me

If I could be a Dragon Fly
and wing my way through the sky
I would never be shy
just me and my Dragon Fly!

By moonlight we ride the wind
chase the comets tail for fun
by day we would hide from the sun
our fragile wings would come undone

On darkest nights we would use
fireflies as our guide
we would dip and we would glide
through the heavens open wide
and scatter diamonds in the night sky
my Dragon Fly and me...

And we would wing past our lovers
silent in the night...
to kiss their face in our flight
much to their surprise and delight
my Dragon Fly and me in sight...

Such a view do we share
away up here in the air
of breezes soft through our hair
my Dragon Fly and me a pair...

Good evening Hope, thank you so much for your kind words.

We can thank Texas Songwriter for this inspiration, his poem on "Barns" encouraged me to think about country roads.

I wanted to express what it was like when my kids were little, the walks we took and the flavor of a fall day in a very rural Upstate New York.

Evening Spotsy!!

Very nice, I love it.

No pancake poems from me tonight
I'm walking country roads, looking
at apples that are not yet cider
and remembering those precious days
when I was a young mother.

you made good on your promise to write us a poem

I cheated again, but one of these days I'll write something completely original. In the meantime, I'll keep reading here for inspiration. ((HUGS))

In 1982 I went to Toronto and drove down to Niagra, New York. I remember seeing the apple trees flush with fruit and the leaves changing just slightly. I knew the deer loved apples, but, though I raise cattle, I did not know cattle would eat them with relish. Did you see these things happen back then?

Very nice piece.

They're Not The Boss Of Me

It was bound to happen.
It had to come to be.
I tried to be their leader.
They're not the boss of me.
My children, like when I was a kid,
Procurred a wandering canine.
Who tried his best to look so sad.
They knew that they had won.
"Daddy, can we keep him?"
"Can we? We love him so".
So in my harshest look, I tried to set the tone.
"No! You may not keep him!", I said.
I set my jaw and cocked my brow."
"But Daddy, pet him, just this once."
"You can show us how."
"No, I will not pet that dog."
"He does not belong to us."
The dog stood there and looked at me,
As if he'd given up.
I turned away, indifferent to circumstance.
I could barely hear them murmur low,
"He never had a chance."
Were they speaking of me, or the dog?
The question needed answering.
So I turned around in time to see
The kids and the dog dancing.
"Daddy, we've already gotten him a flea collar,"
"And we've given him a bath."
"He'll even smile and give a grin,"
"If you give him the command."
"Well, he's not coming into the house!"
"And he best stay off my plants."
"I'll shoot him, 'sure-as-shootin'"
"If he gets near my lily beds."
"And don't get your hopes up high,"
"I'm looking for the owner."
"He can stay, but just 'til then,"
"But then, this party's over."
Well, there! I showed them who was boss.
As they squealed and hugged my neck.
Then threw the frisby 'cross the yard,
And played all day with Jack.
Jack! Who ever heard of a dog named Jack?
But there he was, and here he is,
And he ain't lookin' back.
O, yea. I guess I should finish,
And tell how it's come to be,
He sometimes sits in my easy chair,
And takes a nap with me.
And he loves those little doggie snacks,
I sneak him, when they don't see.
I'm lying, but I'm sticking to my guns.
'Cause, they're not the boss of me.

Good morning.

I am a good deal south of Niagara County. Smack dab in the center of the state.

Oh yes, it is a very common sight to see cows eating fallen apples and green apples. We were told as kids, that cows got drunk from eating green apples.

In the fall, honey bees will hang around apples trees as well. They like the sweet fallen apples, too.
Ah the deer which are in abundance here will feast to their hearts delight on apples, as you mentioned. We have a huge deer population due to people feeding them.

It's not uncommon for deer to wander into the city now days. I don't think they have envaded a poetry meeting in church, but they sure do enjoy roaming around any store they get into.

It's so nice to be reminded of fall, and changing seasons, and autumn.

I have not been in the country this year (where I lived for 20 years raising my kids,) but that is the way it was.

We have tons of sugar maples here and they are the glory of the fall season. I have many pictures of the area taken where the kids and I lived, I should scan them to post. It is truly one of the most beautiful places to live. We have natural gorges in the city. Magnificent sights to see..
the politics here are not to my liking, that's why I am a hard core FReeper.
