The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

No, Haven't read any of his. I'm halfway through the In Death series by Nora Roberts/ J. D. Robb. I've decided to take a break and get series about my nanowrimo plot. *reading* stories isn't cutting it as a creative outlet right now and I'm probably not going to take up quilting again anytime soon.

Bear Bear Bear Bear Bear

All right already! I hear ya!

Nice catch though. When you grabbed this, I'd been on the job for an hour and a half already...

I hate getting up that early.

Clare and I are going to be making some beaded earrings over the next couple of days. We're doing a craft show on Saturday put on by some homeschooled folks. We've got some jewelry, bookmarks and wine glass charms to sell. Clare is also folding some teeny tiny origami stars to use in some earrings.

She's going to make some little pumpkin cakes for the folks to sell for refreshments, and I'm making a batch of chili for them to sell at lunchtime.

Mmmm... pumpkin. I need to get one to put on my porch.

Then I'll figure out some way to eat it. Big'ol will only eat pumpkin if I sneak it into cookies and not tell him. ;)

I have the opposite problem... I like pumpkin pie but Rose doesn't. We usually wind up buying one for the holidays, and then it goes bad before I can get it all eaten.

No kidding. I admire your self restraint, Bear. ;-)

Speaking of which, one of the folks at the volunteer job gave me a big bag of vey rich and tasty homemade hermit bars. I need to move them out of line of sight before they disappear entirely.

Well, I like pumpkin pie, but not *that* much... and besides, we usually also have apple pie and other goodies available at the same time, so I get distracted.

Basically they're really rich frosted spice cookies...usually in bar form, and usually with nuts and raisins, which I don't always like. But these ones have the raisins all ground up, and they just add flavor and sweetness. It's the texture of 'em I don't like...so I really like these.

Actually, what happened was that we were discussing words and trends that are different across the country...like the word for a sub sandwich (the local New England term would be a grinder, though the younger folks don't use that word as much), and this guy asked me if I knew what hermit cookies were. I never realized they were unique to the Northeast, but I guess they aren't as well known elsewhere.

I gotta get his recipe, I'm thinking. They're good.

Teehee. I just researched baskets from Botswana. They will feature in an assassination scene.

No, they just decorate the walls of the Councilman's chambers. They're handmade and thus extravagant in my future world. There's also a strong cultural identification associated with them, something that is rather risque in the future world that is dominated by a version of the UN. Nationalism is out. .. Unless you're a rich and privileged Councilman.
