The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I saw a bumper sticker today that made me think of you and the rest of the horse folks, especially after that crazy Other Harry thread where he didn't seem to get that horses don't care for and feed themselves.

Was on a fairly old Chevy, and it said "If I didn't have a horse, this car would be a Ferrari!"

Make me laugh, anyway.

okayed a project this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. It's a two-day project...due by 9:30 in the a.m.

Um, I don't think that adds up to two days.

Two eight-hour workdays, right? So sixteen hours... hmm... you can just barely make it, Corin.

I'm still half-expecting to get a call tonight saying "The server went all pear-shaped, we've got to rebuild overnight" and have to get myself back in there. So I shouldn't make horrid jokes like that.

Ok, so a quick synopsis of our trip: It was vey nice.

We had the place to ourselves. It was quiet and plesant and restful - and that's exactly what we were after. I'm impressed with PA's state parks if this one was at all representative. Thoughtfully designed, well-appointed and maintained - kudos. And this from a die-hard backpacker who had to swallow her pride and *gasp* car camp.

The park allowed pets in certain sites, so this was Jack and Sadie's first camping trip. Jack loved it and was enthusiastic about everything. He's discovered a great and abiding love for acorns. We have no way of knowing just how many he swallowed. We made him spit out tons. Needless to say they did a number on his tummy. He really liked the little hikes we did during the day and he liked lounging by the fire at night.

Camping fell far short of the standard of living at which Sadie likes to be kept. The gravel rocks hurt her feet. Her old bones and joints didn't appreciate the hikes or the chilly evenings. Everytime we opened the jeep door her ears would perk expectantly, "We're going home!!" only to be crestfallen when the door would close again. "Rats." After a while she decided she was just going to wait in the tent until it was time to go home. Poor girl. But she's a trooper at age 12!

Big'ol and I read books, ate fattening food, roasted marshmallows, and even had a sing-a-long. I got to use my backpacker stove - one of the few gadgets I actually get giggly about - and Big'ol got to set up his big'ol tent (which he didn't ask me about prior to the purchase... I vote for smaller, portable, sensible-type tents...*). The weather was cool in the evenings and nicely warm during the day. Bugs were minimal, ground squirrels (minibears) were abundant.

'Twas a nice trip! (Photos sometime soon....)

*Big'ol insists I add the following: "But you have to admit you like how you can stand up in that thing and it has the great view of the stars through the top." True enough.

I've had nights like that, no fun at all.

I'm doing a massive amount of burning to DVDs, trying to clear up some disk space for the new TV season...

Yeah, "Lost" starts a week from tonight. But there are no less than ten new and returning genre-related shows I plan on recording regularly, starting Friday with "Threshold" on CBS.

Lost does indeed start in a week! We're countin' the days...

Remember to tell me which of them are cool.

Thanks!

Watching some Lost here now, while I'm trying to read stupid technical articles. My advisor is going to really chew me out this week, I haven't made any progress.

Well, Adobe Reader just tried to hijack my computer again. It did this before where it decided to open all .exe files, so I deleted it. I really need to read pdfs for research purposes so I reinstalled it tonight... same problem. Only this time deleting it made the .exe files not know what they should be opened with.

Think I fixed it. Unless my hacking with the registry just killed my computer and I don't know it yet.

No, it's not. Wish I knew why the idiotic program decides to run my life. Don't think it's virus related, I'm firewalled and run Symantec.

What is Threshold about? We watched the premiere episode of "Bones" last night. The case in the show was fashioned after the Chandra Levy case. The Season Premiere of "House" was good, too.

In which State Park did you camp? Penn. Power and Light also runs some nice campgrounds. We stayed in one south and west of Lancaster several times. It's on a creek that runs into the Susquehanna River.

What is Threshold about?

A government team of some sort is assigned to investigate a possible alien invasion.

"Invasion" on ABC and "Surface" on NBC are two other alien invasion series.

I agree with Bear... there's something happening there for which the facts are not yet in evidence.

I've had trouble with Adobe products in the past... and then there was that Acrobat version a couple years ago that was pretty close to being a virus itself... but by and large it shouldn't be *that* bad.
