A Columbus man died Friday after his SUV went out of control on Interstate 185, police said.

Adrian Lamar Williams, 30, of 217 Goat Rock Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 5:21 p.m. accident near Hubbard Road.

Williams was traveling south on I-185 when he attempted to change lanes. The 2000 Mitsubishi Montero he was driving went out of control and overturned several times, police said in a report. Williams, who was not wearing a seat belt, was hurled from the SUV.

A passenger, Kevin Walker, of Fortson, was taken to The Medical Center, the report said.

SUV was mentioned only twice...something must be wrong.

Call me unparanoid, but I happen to think SUV is the best, most succinct and descriptive term for the type of vehicle. It's a better description than "car", "truck", or generic "vehicle".... might have worked as well as "4x4".

How would you wish they described the vehicle in this accident?

"Driver killed when he lost control of his SUV" maybe.

Put the blame on the driver, not the bad, bad SUV.

or "Driver fails to wear seatbelt and is killed when thrown from his vehicle during an accident."

I don't know what a Prius is.

Yugo - car or compact car, hatchback
Volvo - car or station wagon
Saturn - car or sedan

People don't usually try to make sure to put the blame on the dead guy in articles about accidental death.

A Prius is Toyota's gasoline/electric hybrid.

OK - then it's a car. Maybe hybrid car would be a good descriptor since they're unsusual and notable.

Let me ask this... do you think the type of vehicle is completely irrelevant? Are SUV's not more likely to roll several times, as this one did, if you lose control of them at speed, than say, a sports car?

The way it's written I'm wondering if there wasn't something wrong with the vehicle.

Kept control of the vehicle = no death.

Worn seat beat = (maybe) no death.

Most "accidents" are a series of bad judgements that add up to kill people. Lets not blame the SUV.

Oh brother. Would you still be offended if it said he "lost control of his car?" "Lost control of his truck?" "Lost control of his bicycle?"

My point is, there's some allegation here that this writer has some axe to grind with SUVs... whether he/she does or not, SUV is a good descriptive word that paints a picture of what happened, and that is what is supposed to happen in the reporting of news. Lets not get all worked up over whether the type of vehicle is being descriminated against if it's mentioned in a wreck, or we'll be a the point where we end up with articles about criminals on the loose and no description of the person's race can be printed.

Mitusbishi Montero's DO NOT count as SUV's. They are too tall and too unstable. A REAL SUV is a Chevy Suburban. I have no idea how one could classify these SUV wannabe's as anything other than wannabes. The original Toyota minivan rolled over without any provacation at all. These silly cars (foreign designed "SUVs") are too light and too tall.

The Mitsubishi Monteros are a tall vehicle, but they also have a wide wheel base. I have an '02 Montero Sport and I absolutely love it. It also has a good size wheel base, and it handles like a dream. This guy did something way wrong to get that thing to roll. People need to know how to drive an SUV BEFORE they buy one.

I would have to agree with you on needing to drive an SUV before you buy one. I didn't realize they had a big wheel base. The ones I've looked at didn't look all that stable. I had friends that rolled their Toyota minivan; they were just driving normally at regular speeds. It sort of put me off of foreign SUV's

Some have a wide wheel base, others are not so wide. I know those old Toyota vans you're speaking of...very narrow, yet very tall. Just like the old Jeep CJ-5 (discontinued years ago because of roll over problems),they are an accident waiting to happen. Also, the SUV's are a different type of vehicle from vans. Most SUV's are made so that they may be taken off roading if desired, and vans are, well, vans...made to carry people or cargo. Both types (I own one of each) are made to be driven differently than a car....especially the SUV. People really need to know what they're doing, and really respect the vehicle before climbing into the drivers seat. Any make, year, or type of vehicle can be a dangerous one...it all depends on whose behind the wheel.
