Television talk show host and actress Rosie O'Donnell will return to Broadway in September in a production of "Fiddler on the Roof," the show's producers said on Monday.
O'Donnell will star opposite actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein in the musical running at the Minskoff Theater in Manhattan. Fierstein who is playing Tevye, a milkman, will be joined by O'Donnell as his wife Golde, according to a statement.
"As a twenty year friend of Rosie's, I couldn't be happier that we will finally share a stage together," Fierstein said in the statement.
A previous O'Donnell Broadway venture, "Taboo," which she produced, struggled at the box office and closed in 2004 after a three-month run. The musical was about the career of 1980s British pop star Boy George, who co-starred in it, although not in the lead role.
Fierstein is best known for his award winning "Torch Song Trilogy," three one act plays exploring the lives of gay men.
For six years, O'Donnell was the host and executive producer of talk program "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" and has appeared in several TV series and movies.
Rosie playing some guy's wife? That is a stretch........
Yuk. No thanks.
yes, that's him.
Ouch !
Let me guess, she is the Roof?
Gee, I'm really thrilled for Moose, er, I mean Rosie.
A gay Fiddler on the Roof? Feh.
Must be an all-homo production of Fiddler on the Roof.
Better reinforce that roof...oh that was so bad of me...
He's about the last person I would cast as the lead in a musical. Her, too.
When my wife and I saw this on TV we immediately said in unison: "She'll play Tevye!"
Homosexual on Broadway?
Think she'll be treated like a queen?
If she is the fiddler it better be a strong effin roof.
I hope she's not playing some transgender fiddler on the roof.
If so, my professional recommendation would be increasing the width depth of the ridge beam to at least a 4x12 and shoring it up with 4x4 posts no longer than 8 feet in length and terminating on reinforced concrete pads along a four foot spacing.
Rosie O'Donnell to return to Broadway in 'Fiddler'
as what? a draft horse?
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
Plan me no plans
I'm in no rush
Maybe I've learned
Playing with matches
A guy can get burned
So,
Bring me no ring
woo me no wife
Find me no find
Catch me no catch
I think we all know what she will fiddle with...
