I am very close to buying a pony imminent, as in possibly within the next few days and this message is very much off topic.
The price of the pony is about $750, and she appears to be very nice. Stabling would be around $75. She is not a shetland, but more like a small horse. (Not sure of terms here.) Her temperament seems very good. Gentle, which is what I want.
If any of you can give me any advice on what to look for or look out for, Ill take it. I have no experience with anything equine.
It might be best to do this by FReepmail, as I dont think many others would be interested.
" I don't drink beer. Scotch is my preferred poison."
Sorry Harry,
Scotch is NOT poison.
Oh shoot, Rhiannon, I'm sorry, that italicized part was not meant for you. I don't know how it got in there. I'm so sorry.
No problem No offense taken.
32 is pretty average, my first horse died at 34 but she was put to sleep. 70? No way.
Best comment I ever heard on equines:
Horses (and probably ponies too) are one of the best proofs going for creation and against evolution. There is no way an animal that stupid, mean, fragile, and hungry could possibly have evolved. Particularly given how useful they are to people.
I grew up around horses all my life. It's not fun. It's not even terribly rewarding. All of the horse people I know - excepting the western riders - have been high strung and a little neurotic. I suspect that's because of the annoyance of having to tie their lives down to a hayburning beast that, no matter how sweet and cute it looks at you with those gorgeous golden-brown eyes, is really just waiting for the moment you let your guard down so that it can bite off a couple fingers or land a good kick somewhere special like your skull or betwixt your legs.
"Someone has a chip on their shoulder"
LOL!!! My husband could have written that rant, he despises horses and just puts up with them because he knows I love them. He's one of those people that has had nothing but bad luck with them, starting from when he was a kid living on a farm til now (Tuffy ran over him once, long story). He had better luck with cows and he really loves pigs. When he was in 4H he had over 200 pigs.
You want a pony to give the local kids rides...
You buy flowers for young girls on the local basketball team...
Haven't your neighbors told their children to stay away from you yet?
Gads.
I recall the advice my Dad gave to people who would ask him about buying a boat. My dad was a terrific sailor, enlisted in the Navy, served four years on a carrier, loved everything about the "high seas". But when it came to boating, and he did own some beautiful sailing vessels, he always gave the same advice to people seeking his input on buying a boat and sailing: "Stand in your shower and tear up $100 dollar bills. Boat ownership is like that - it is very expensive and you get wet - basically, end of story." The rest was up to them to decide. Is horse/pony ownership somehow condensed into something like this?? Could be, but in the end, it's up to YOU to decide.
Harry, all your posts are BS.
What I am is a bit crazy and rather bored these days.
Do you have a job yet? You're 56 years old, you need to be contributing to your community in some useful way, and giving pony rides, hanging around young girl basketball players, and giving gifts to neighborhood little girls is not the way to go. You quit an EMT course because it was too intense? Have you gotten professional help or AA for your scotch drinking problem? Have you found a church yet? You've been living there four years, you should have some adult friends and groups to spend time with.
I see nothing wrong with buying gifts for the local kids. I even got a computer program to help me keep track of their birthdays. I do not invite them inside my house or otherwise make any inappropriate contact with them. I just like them. Kids are, in many ways, more likeable than adults. Plus, it gives me something to do. As would the pony.
Forget the kids until you get your own act together, that's how you can really help them. Set an example. Children are not toys for your entertainment and a man of 56 needs to be involved with other adults. Frankly, the fact that you have a computer program to keep track of their birthdays bothers me.
I can take the razz. I'm too old to mind it.
If you're lonely there are plenty of groups for adults you can join. As for the pony, do it a favor and let someone else have it. Get a cat or a dog as a companion for yourself, not to attract children. And this isn't razz, this is serious advice. Find some real counseling, not just advice on FR.
By musing about whether you can get a DUI while driving a pony cart. You're not working on it, you're looking for new ways to get around drunk. I don't care if you get yourself killed.... But leave the pony out of it.
And the neighborhood kids.
Excellent observations and advice. You listening, Harry?
Yes.... and most definately leave the neighborhood kids alone.
Do the two young girl basketball players you watch know you posted their names and schools on the internet? I bet they'd rightfully be very alarmed by that.
To say nothing of their parents. If that were my daughter, it would be restraining order time.
I think we've all been too kind and gentle with Harry, somebody needs to slap him and get him out of this fixation with children. I'd hate to think that posters on FR have unintentionally been enablers in all of this.
Do you know who that guy is? Perhaps the authorities should be notified about his fixation and the guys neighbors alerted to the stuff he's posting. I have 5 kids and I sure as heck would want to know what's in my neighborhood lurking.
Becky how much do you want for that pali..?
Sure, if they have enough $100 bills.
