FReeper Family Table - July 15, 2005 - Out of Commission Mom
FReepers | July 15, 2005 | Gabz

Posted on 07/14/2005 8:00:13 PM PDT by Gabz

Howdy folks.......so sorry for the late night ping and lack of imaginiation on a topic. I have been a space cadet most of this week and just remembered about our FRiendly FRiday get-together, and I'm not going to be here tomorrow.

Our emergency preparedness topic of last Friday did me absolutely no good last Friday night. The simple act of turning on a light would have prevented my problems - but hindsight is always 20/20.

About 8:30 last Friday night, I was headed for the bathroom and by not turning on the dining room light I didn't notice my portable sewing machine on the floor near the BR door.......I tripped over it and broke my ankle when I went down.

when I went to see the orthopedist Wednesday, instead of leaving there with a real cast on my leg, instead of the splint/cast I've been sporting since Friday night, I left with an appointment in the OR tomorrow morning for a plate to be put into the ankle.

Needless to say - I'm not going to be around until sometime on Saturday at the earliest.

Have at it guys and gals.......the table's set and the coffee is on the timer.

Sorry I'm being such a downer - but this has been a really messed up week.......I absolutely DESPISE being dependent on others. Being in a bunch of pain, barely being able to get the hang of crutches, not being able to stand for any length of time, and not being able to drive means that is exactly what I'm going to have to do for the foreseeable future.

Please share your experiences for coping with family when you've been out of commission....I'll be all ears when I get back :)

Good Evening, everyone.

I'm not looking for sympathy, believe me, because what I did was really dumb.......I'm looking for good solid suggestions from anyone who's been there done that and got the T-shirt!!!

It has been very interesting explaining to the 7 year old what is going to be done and why I am not coming home from the hospital tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to reading the experiences of others.

In the grand scheme of things, this is just a minor blip - but from my seat right now, it's turning into a bit of a crisis.

Oh Gabz! I'm so sorry!!! Bless your heart. I don't have any suggestions tonight (I, too, am having a crazy week!). I will sleep on it and maybe something brilliant will come to me in the night. Or, you know, some other wonderful freeper will have already come up with the perfect suggestions.

Have they given you a time frame of how long you will have to be off your feet? I had surgery on a foot once. The only thing I can think of right now is how I wrapped my foot in cling wrap so I could take a shower. It sucked. I'm so very sorry!

Gabz ((((hugs)))) Good luck tomorrow and I'll say a prayer for you and your surgeon!

Next time, turn on the light!

I hate when I can't 'run' the house, but when you can't, you can't. I was out of commission with a shoulder injury for awhile last summer. I had to let go of the anxiety of not being able to do everything, and just know that my husband could feed the kids and animals, empty and run the dishwasher when they ran out of dishes, and wash clothes when they ran out of those. The picking up can be done in small amounts, and big cleaning can just wait.

Just sit back with your foot up (if that's what the doctor says to do) and know that you'll get back to it soon enough. The trick is healing thouroughly this time, so you don't re-injure yourself. Get a book you've been wanting to read, but haven't because of time restraints. I'm reading A Patriot's History of America, it was co-authored by FReeper LS, and is a great book.

Just remember that you have to heal, if there's a mess it'll get cleaned eventually, and don't eat too much while you aren't as active, that's an easy thing to do (I know).

You can always balance the checkbook or do some home office filing you've been meaning to do!

I'll be thinking about you tomorrow, and look forward to your report as soon as you can let us know.

Oh yeah, ankle surgery never stopped anyone from FReeping!

Thanks, Friend.

I was laughing with the nurse this afternoon about the instructions I had been given on Wednesday - one of them was to take a warm soapy shower and thoroughly clean the surgical site........I laughed so hard - I have not seen my leg from the knee to toes, let alone my ankle since last Friday night :)

Thank you for your kinds word and prayer.

To be honest, the only time the dining room light has been off since is during the middle of the day....we only have one bathroom in this house, and you must go into the dining room to get to it :)

It's noto that I have to do everything that bugs me, it's that I can do so little. My husband is as good a cook as I am, and used to do more of the laundry then me when I still worked. but until I'm allowed to drive again he's got to rearrange his work schedule so he can pick Jax up from day camp and do all the shopping, dealing with my garden, etc........while I get to sit on my butt and FReep.

But what really has me down - is how this has basically destroyed our plans for the summer.......there's going to be lots of father/daughter activities without mom, because I won't be able to do the fishing, hiking, biking, swimming, etc we had planned. Let alone the roofing and siding we have all the materials to start doing. I'm not happy on missing out - but it changes their plans as well, and I feel bad about that.

Enough of my self-pity - I said from the beginning - I'm not looking for sympathy.

again, my thanks for your words and prayers.

I'm a stubborn cuss and so I will probably be back on this computer shortly after I get home on saturday (Good Lord willing)

That's easy. Just tell the kids you're a klutz and things will get better with time.
In the meantime, EL night lights in the hall work wonders. for not tripping over stuff.

Sorry about your mishap and get well soon.

I was on complete bedrest for over 10 weeks while I was pregnant with my twins.

I don't like being dependent on anyone either.

Good luck with the surgery, and I hope you feel better quickly.

I forgot my advice, and that is to follow doctor's orders.

If your are not allowed to do something, then don't do it. Don't try to push yourself. You'll regret it in the end.

"Kiddo, your mom is really sick. The doctor told her that if she doesn't feel better, she can sleep over with the nurses at the hospital. See, she's got her own bed, her own TV, a bathroom. Remember how you were sick, and she stayed with you? Well, the doctor has nurses who will stay with her. She'll be okay, and we'll go visit her tomorrow."

I am so sorry this happened and that you will need surgery. Prayers for a successful surgery though.

This shows us how one fell swoop can whip a family right out of schedule and mess everything up. Gosh. But everyone will make do. I hope lots of people have good advice for you. Best is of course if someone you love and trust (like your Mom, perhaps?) could come in and do the basics that need doing while you can't. I know that's not always possible.

Good luck!!

Good luck! Be sure to follow the instructions after the surgery (as well as possible), so that you'll recover, instead of being permanently limited!

I am so sorry to hear about your accident! I don't have any good advice to offer... just to add to what others have said, that make sure you follow orders now so you can heal properly and get this over with! Some enforced idleness may not hurt you, either. Your house won't be up to your standards, but everyone will survive. As for children, it might be a nice treat for some kids to have mom as a captive! Think of the reading, coloring, playing, etc. Anyway, I read a saying once that I like (maybe it was on FR?): Anyone can be a good housekeeper if your standards are low enough! You just have to lower your standards temporarily. Might even be a good learning experience for other family members, they will probably rise to the occasion in ways you haven't even anticipated.

The only other thing I'd add is when friends, neighbors, etc., offer help... take it! I think often we hesitate to do so, and many times that is a mistake. Let yourself be helped by others.

Best wishes for a very speedy recovery!

So sorry to hear about your accident! I have had many ankle injuries throughout my life. I played college basketball. My best advice is to listen to your doctors and do of all your rehab. I hope you have some family close by!! I usually take care of people in my family when they need it. Anyway, just make sure that when you are imobile, try to pick a good location to set up shop for the day. Try to have just about everything you will need close by, especially good books (might I suggest the new Harry Potter)and magazines, and take any and all help that is offered!! This may be your only "vacation" for a very long time. ;) Make the most of it!
