The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!
Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Let them go! Let them go!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Went to one of those receptions that were actually a sit-down dinner...we had place cards for that one.

Our friends there do have internet, so I'll try to log on when I can. We're so excited about it! Clare got her new camera the other day, and she's been playing with it. I'm taking the Instruction Manual for ours so I can read it, and play with the settings on the trip over. I haven't used it that much since we got it at Christmas, and it's got lots of cool settings that I'd like to learn how to use.
My friend sent me a long Pdf file this morning with instructions on what to do when we get to Narita Airport. It is very detailed and very helpful. Her husband works out of his company's Boston office sometimes, so he's bringing a cell phone that's keyed for Japan and dropping it off at the home of Clare's friend who's also going with us. That way, we can call Gina from the airport to let her know what time to expect the Limousine Bus to arrive at Shinjuki Station, which is not too far from their house. The bus will be great because it will save her an almost two hour drive to the airport, and it's only $27 each way for us, which isn't too bad considering the convenience of it.

What camera did she end up getting?
Next week, huh? Wow...I've been thinking of that as being a long way off. But then, I guess you've been talking about it for a while, and time *has* gone by, even if it doesn't seem like it in my little world.

The rolls turned out pretty good. Not as strong a taste as I like...so I'm going to let this second batch of starter sour for a couple of days or more.
Also, the rolls are fine, but I think a loaf would be better. It's got the characteristic large air holes though...very nice texture.
I have the second batch in a jar up in the cabinet. In a canning jar, you know? With the ring? But there's no lid, I put a coffee filter instead of a lid, just screwed it down with a ring so it won't build up pressure.

I use coffee filters to strain my bacon grease through too...you end up with a fine product. I strain it right into a canning jar and keep it in the fridge.
