So, who died?
Vassar Clements - really excellent bluegrass / blues fiddler. I got to see him perform once, but only once. But I'll always remember. He was something.
What bugs me is that there was one earlier thread, and that remains in News while mine got moved. Obviously I musta done something wrong, but I dunno what.
I guess I must have picked the wrong topics. That one is in Misc, and I picked Culture.
If you go to Dell you have the peace of mind that you're getting exactly the right thing. The premium you'll pay to Dell is probably not all that much. Yes, you can save a few bucks (and literally, just a few bucks) by going to tomshardware or craigslist or CDW or Zones, but you gotta be really sure of what you want. Dell will know the right thing, and in my mind that's worth a small premium.
Fortunately, we're at a point in time where RAM memory chips are at a very low price. I find it hard to believe that we're now paying just over $100/GB for memory. I remember, in 1990 or thereabouts paying $600 for an 8MB SIMM for my Mac. Yikes.... but I *doubled* my memory from 8MB to 16MB... woohoo! :-)
Heh...when I bought my first computer (really, truly of my own), I went back and forth over whether to get the 850MB hard drive and 16MB of RAM or the 1GB (brand new at that time) and 8MB of RAM. Finally decided on the bigger hard drive. Think it actually saved me a few bucks, too.
We're really rather spoiled.
Hey... don't feel bad... MY VERY FIRST article I ever posted was pulled by none other than JimRob himself. He sent me a nastygram to "Keep that crap off FR" or something to that effect.
I was deeply hurt. I had no idea I had posted something verboten. In fairness, it was merely an e-mail message that I'd gotten from a local democrat congresscritter, but I thought it was interesting and useful for discussion.
I didn't post any articles for ages after that.
We attended the Phildelphia Folk Festival when they had their 25th Annual show. There were some bluegrass artists, but the performer we remember most was Elizabeth Cotton. She was very old at the time, and died not too much later. She wrote the song "Freight Train" when she was 12, and it was like a one hit wonder that she continued to perform at Folk Festivals until her death.
I know, I know. And I'm probably takin' it wayyyyy more personally than I should. That kind of day.
Heh...it's only taken me...ummm...four years, just about, to start posting articles on occasion. I think I'm up to a grand total of four, and every time I do it, my heart is absolutely in my mouth. I like it here...I'm terrified of doing something that might get me cut off!
And I guess I have a tendency to be a perfectionist about *some* things, even if I'm a slob in other ways.
I kin play "Freight Train", but not upside down like Miz Cotten did. ;-) She was left handed, and played the guitar upside down.
I have a hard enough time playing it right side up!
I bet you'd like Vassar. Not really straight bluegrass, most of his stuff. Jazzy and bluesy, too. Just good.
Check out some sound clips on Amazon when you get a chance!
Spoiled... heck...
Can you imagine how fast one of these computers today would be if you installed nothing but CP/M, or DOS 6.22 on it?
Dang... I've thought about trying it, just for grins.
Heh...yeah, I've always wondered.
Every time we come out with faster hardware, some wise guy invents software to slow it down agin.
Years ago I was joking with an IT buddy of mine that, sure, systems are becoming ungodly fast but before we know it the new version of MS Office will require a set of 10 CD's to fully install.
I had no idea it would happen this fast. :-)
Nomatter how fast they make computers, programmers will come up with ways to consume that capacity. :-)
Pretty soon it'll take up 10 DVDs. Or whatever technology we're using by then.
Ooh...wine kicking in. Sweet wine is far more dangerous than dry. Sneaky stuff.
I'll do that!
She's my hero...
128 mb of ram? Ouch, that thing has to be slow as a dog! Mine has three times that and I think it plods sometimes.
Joseph is fixing to take advantage of a sale at Circuit City that has a 512 stick on sale after rebate for less than $40. He's gonna buy one tomorrow, add it to what he had already to see how it handles. If it's not enough, David will go back to get another one so we can get another rebate. It's one per household, and David's in a different household now. ;o)
Nice... but that's normal RAM, right? Not for laptops?
