The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!
Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Let them go! Let them go!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

So, for whatever reason, we had on Dateline: NBC. We watched as they spent about a half hour of the show trying to track down the source of the nasty porn spam that a nice mom got on her computer. They never were able to find the source of the spam, but at the end of the half-hour, they're big recommendation to stop nasty porn spam was:
Buy some anti-spam software.
Gahh... and the old media wonder why they're a laughingstock...

Hmmmm.....
The Fellowshipe is approaching the mountains. Why do I expect to see MSH in the background?
To: RMDupree
I could apply for the data entry one, I s'pose...though I doubt it pays much more than minimum wage.
Not qualified for the other.
I'm still hoping for the college one. I want it badly.

The pay scale isn't that bad, actually.
And you get benefits on your first day of employment.
Worth a look, if you want to cast a net in that direction.

Thank you! We had a great time, and the best part was I lost 10 pounds. I AIN'T JOKIN!! My friend lived 1/2 mile from the train station, so it was a mile just getting to and from the train. Most days we went out shopping or sightseeing, and there was not a day that I didn't walk at least 3 or 4 miles. After a few days, I bought a pedometer that measures 'steps', and on the first day I wore it I walked 19,000 steps. The most was 20,000 steps, on the last day we were there, and went down to Enoshima Island. I saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time from ground level! I didn't get down to the beach, just saw it from up on the island.
It sure is good to be home, though. I missed my latex mattress! ;o) Futons are just not that comfortable!

Right now we and the pups are watching Firefly. I do hope the SciFi channel picks it up and continues on with a new season.I don't think there's any chance of that. But, I have read that there's an option for two more movies, if Serenity does well.

My friend created a couple of CDs with pics. I'll have to upload them to my York account. I'll prolly do that over the weekend. I'm just too blasted to do it right now. Got some nice ones, though, including kudzu in it's natural environment. Did those for SSQ, cause there was kudzu all over the Delta in MS. It was imported in the 20's to deal with erosion control.

Just found what I was looking for: terminal velocity aside, the rate of acceleration on a falling body under 1 G is about
9.8 meters per second squared.
Thanks, y'all.
Assuming Gandalf's fall from the bridge of Khazad-Dum to be 120 seconds long (IIRC), the Wizard's velocity at impact would be 1,176 meters per second (a little over 2600 MPH) at a point about 43.8 miles below the shattered remains of the bridge.
This is, of course, an utter load. Terminal velocity for a skydiver is, I believe, in the 300 MPH range. Assuming the terminal velocity of falling Istari whilst in close combat with Balrogs is 304.08 MPH ('cuz it's conveniently in my spreadsheet), that rate would have been reached 14 seconds into the fall; 106 seconds later they would impact the subterranean lake at a depth of merely 9.59 miles bbl (below bridge level).
This should not be construed as authoritative, or even interesting. Take it for what it's worth.
