I've been trying to remember what it is that you dip Q-tips into in order to clean out ear wax.
This is basically for my dog, but I could occasionally use some myself.

Some people who are into organics
dip their Q-tips in fire ants,
as long as you don't pick up the Queen
you're all right.
Remember to try ANDRO nasal spray, for the ones
that get away.

Don't try to clean your dog's ears with a q-tip! - or anyone else's ears for that matter, without really knowing what you are doing. Stick a q-tip in your own ears, and you'll see how easy it is to really hurt him if you couldn't feel what you are doing.
If his ears need cleaned, go to the vet and get a cleaning solution made for ears that you squirt in and swish around. If they are brown and gunky, it's not ear wax, it's a yeast infection and he needs an antifungal. Very common in flop-eared dogs, especially in summer. Best to make an appt and get him the right antifungal med. It will only get worse, and untreated will lead to a secondary bacterial infection.

never stick a q-tip in your ear!

Your ears, usually. Though I have heard of those who try dipping them into other places, with less than spectacular results.

Best thing to do: irrigate YOUR ears with a syringe (like one used when babies are born to clear their air passages). I've seen water picks used in doctor's offices.
Do not use Q-Tips, as they tend to push the wax further into your ears.
As for Fido, take him to the vet.

I had opportunity to visit an otolaryngologist (ear, nose & throat doc) last fall for surgery on my parotid gland for a wide local excision to remove melanoma.
ALL over his office were warnings to NEVER use Q-tips in your ears. I recall one that echoed something my mother used to say, "Never stick anything in your ear smaller than your elbow"
Probably goes for the pooch as well!
