I need help with LOTR. Two friends and I were discussing the books and movies last weekend. Friend 1 observed that the relationship between Frodo and Sam (in the movies) had homosexual overtones. Friend 2 retorted that the relationship is based on the master/servant relationship of old England and that Friend 1 was looking at it through American eyes, where rugged individualism is more prized. I--caught in the middle--had to admit that I thought that Sean Astin overplayed Sam at times but was great overall.
So, was Friend 1 right about the gay overtones, or was Friend 2's explanation correct? I'm rather at a loss over the whole debacle.

I agree, and think the same thing when I see Liv Tyler interviewed. Very beautiful, but lacking two active brain cells to form a thought ...
Liv certainly isn't a big thinker.... but at least she enjoyed all the pretty dresses ;~D

Just for fun, next time that you watch those movies, count all the cleft chins. I noticed that elves don't have cleft chins, but practically everyone else does. In the books, Frodo is described as having one...and they seem to be a dominant "mortal" gene in PJ's Middle Earth. A cleft is really rather rare, and is related to mild birth defects.
I know it's not the same...but I'm really looking forward to the Narnia movies, which will be coming out in a similar fashion, so far as I understand. The first is coming around Christmas this year.
I don't have as much of a heartstring for the Narnia books, but the movies look beautiful.
They aren't as deep in a lot of ways, being kids' books, but they're good. And yes, the movies look like they'll be beautiful! Funny...Narnia seems to have mountains very similar to the ones in Middle Earth! Heh...
I really disliked how Arwen was written, personally. There's one beautiful, strong, warrior woman in the series and it's not her!
But that's just me. She annoyed me, with her breathy voice and silly outfits. And I wanted to see Glorfindel.
Did you notice that Eowyn had a deeper chin cleft than Aragorn?
Heh.... I missed all these chin clefts...
Pray tell, why? What does Glorfindel offer that another elf can't give?
Glorfindel was a fond reminder of how excited I was the first time I read LotR. Showing up on his shining horse to save Frodo - now that was cool.

I have a brother with an Eowyn infatuation. There was much pause-age while watching her parts. I know of the chin cleft.
Oh well. She IS a cutie-pie. I'll give him that.
He is actually a very Conservative actor, and worked at the Pentagon as a civilan aid to the Secretary of the Army.
