Being from the east and hunting years back, you can imagine I might have had a dream of hunting for elk someday. Never came about. I had a sporterized Belgium Mauser 7.65 91 action, as well as a Remington 700 Custom varmiter in .243, as well as twenty twos. Shot many a round from buddies 30/06's etc..
Haven't hunted in many a year, eyes are to bad to even consider it at this point. Enjoy while you can.

Haven't hunted in many a year, eyes are to bad to even consider it at this point. I understand. Mine are headed there also. Got some macular degeneration going on.
You might consider this...if you're "officially" restricted, NM allows and actually hosts "handicapped" hunts where you can actually rifle hunt during the rut. They'll go so far as to assign a game and fish troop to find and put you on an elk, even do the shot if you're not comfortable with it.
It's a good program.
