Tom Cruise proposes on Eiffel Tower

Tom Cruise is engaged to his girlfriend Katie Holmes, after proposing to her in the early hours of this morning at the Eiffel Tower. The actor confirmed the proposal at a Paris press conference, where the 26-year-old actress sat beside him wearing a large diamond ring.

"Yes, I proposed to her... it was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven’t slept at all," said the 42-year-old star of Top Gun and the Mission Impossible series.

Holmes appears in the upcoming Batman Begins and achieved fame in the American television series, Dawson's Creek, before attracting critical acclaim in the film, Pieces of April.

The couple announced their relationship in April, after Cruise broke up with Spanish actress Penelope Cruz and Holmes and actor Chris Klein called off their long-standing engagement.

Holmes will become Cruise's third wife. His two previous marriages, to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, have ended in divorce.

Today's announcement may end speculation that the Cruise-Holmes relationship has been a publicity stunt.

Their wedding will be a dream come true for the actress who told a magazine last October - before she even met Cruise - that when she was a little girl, "I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise".

Cruise, one of the world's most bankable stars, is in Paris to promote Stephen Spielberg's latest film, War of the Worlds, in which he plays Ray Ferrier, an ordinary man leading the fight against alien invaders. The film opens in Britain on July 1.

If the pre-nup says five years, look for a 4 1/2 year marriage. Can you say business deal? I knew ya could.

That Jimmy Kimmel clip (Linked on the website) was hilarious.

Cruise and his "fiance" are supplying the best comedy coming out of Hollyweird in years.

The "couple" should make a reality show to top it all off.

Well, for me, these Hollywood stories are a little bit of escape from the heavier issues. After spending the last few days in heated debate over the Terri Schiavo autopsy report, it's good to have something frivolous to chat about.

But you can always skip over the subjects that aren't interesting...that's what I do. :)

Crusie is a certifiable nut job. I'm surprised he didn't propose to the Eifle Tower.

my proposal was at the Knights of Columbus Hall

My sisters was in our own living room

My other sisters was on our front porch

My brother was at a dance

My second prooposal (after so man years) was on the beach

what is so special about tom and the eifel tower proposal except publicity? Wow, what needy people they are. Instead of a proposal alone or with family and friends sharing in the moment...he goes atop the tower and then has a press conference? What a joke. An absolute joke. How did anyone know it was atop the tower unless the press was called? Yipes...i'm so glad I am me.

Make extra pancakes for me too, would ya? :)

ITA. End speculation? Bwahahaha! Proposing at the Eiffel Tower, slapping a big rock on her hand and calling a press conference. Bwahahaha! Could the guy be an any bigger cliche? Somebody stop him before he embarrasses himself.

Wait—too late. I'd wish them well, but maybe I'll just wish them good luck with the new movies and leave it at that.

The interviewees:

1. Jennifer Garner
2. Jessica Alba
3. Katie Holmes

#1& #2 thought he wanted to talk about the lead role in Mission Impossible sequel so they met with him. But instead of MI3, he asked them to be his beard and laid out his business offer to them.

Of course, #1 and #2 turned him down. I guess #3 isn't that smart.

How about proposing in America?

The Grand Canyon
Pikes Peak
Golden Gate Bridge
Gettysburg
Monuments in DC
Statue of Liberty
Empire State Building
Grand Central Station
Kennedy Center
A Beach
An Opera House
A Beautiful Backyard
A Deck
Under an Apple Tree
On a bench by a river

Oh yeah, that's right. None of the above are french. Have to do it on foreign soil as that makes it more dramatic.

Give me the good ole America and hometown USA ANYDAY!

"I'm surprised he didn't propose to the Eifle Tower."

If men can marry women, the men can marry men, then men can marry towers. It's just simple logic!

Unforunately, according to the IMDB, Rachel Leigh Cook is engaged to actor Daniel Gillies.

Hey, if Katie can break it off with Chris Klein, Rachel can end it with Gillies.

Seems like a Troy McClure/Patty Bouvier marriage to me.

You sayin Katie Holmes is a lesbian?

For the record: Selma Bouvier was married to Troy McClure

Ah, but Gillies played John Jameson Jr. in Spiderman 2. And JJ Jr eventually turns into the Man Wolf. And no lady can resist the Man Wolf. Not a one. So, clearly RLC's going to stick with him.
