Tom Cruise proposes on Eiffel Tower

Tom Cruise is engaged to his girlfriend Katie Holmes, after proposing to her in the early hours of this morning at the Eiffel Tower. The actor confirmed the proposal at a Paris press conference, where the 26-year-old actress sat beside him wearing a large diamond ring.

"Yes, I proposed to her... it was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven’t slept at all," said the 42-year-old star of Top Gun and the Mission Impossible series.

Holmes appears in the upcoming Batman Begins and achieved fame in the American television series, Dawson's Creek, before attracting critical acclaim in the film, Pieces of April.

The couple announced their relationship in April, after Cruise broke up with Spanish actress Penelope Cruz and Holmes and actor Chris Klein called off their long-standing engagement.

Holmes will become Cruise's third wife. His two previous marriages, to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, have ended in divorce.

Today's announcement may end speculation that the Cruise-Holmes relationship has been a publicity stunt.

Their wedding will be a dream come true for the actress who told a magazine last October - before she even met Cruise - that when she was a little girl, "I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise".

Cruise, one of the world's most bankable stars, is in Paris to promote Stephen Spielberg's latest film, War of the Worlds, in which he plays Ray Ferrier, an ordinary man leading the fight against alien invaders. The film opens in Britain on July 1.

Even though some will take bets on how many weeks this marriage will last -- I still wish 'em both well.

Maybe she'll want a long engagement.

Didn't think of that -- as the article states, her previous engagement lasted a long time, then she and the other guy broke up.

Better to find out you're not right together BEFORE the wedding than AFTER.

At the Eiffel Tower?

Why do I think Cruise is overcompensating?

Nothing newsworthy in that...he'll get to propose to several more women if he lives long enough. This is a little man with a big wallet and some women like that for a maximum run of three to five years. The younger they are, the shorter the run.

Are they sure he didn't propose to the the Eiffel Tower, considering the rumors about his preferences and all?

With Cruise, proposing next to a parking meter would be overcompensating.

If the rumors are true... Tom has a big affection for things of a phallic nature, if you get my meaning.

No it won't. Most Hollyweird marriages are publicity stunts.

Oh well. I think Rachel Leigh Cook is still single, so my dream of a hot, single brunette lives on . . .

Not overcompensating - the tower just reminds him of something he would like.
