NEW YORK (AP) - The actor Russell Crowe was arrested Monday morning for allegedly throwing a telephone at an employee of the Manhattan hotel where he was staying, police said.

Crowe, 41, who plays a boxer in his latest film "Cinderella Man," allegedly threw the phone at the Mercer Hotel employee, striking him in the face, during an argument at around 4:20 a.m., said police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wysokowski.

The Australian movie star was arrested and charged by police with second degree assault, Wysokowski said. Crowe was expected to appear in Manhattan Criminal Court later on Monday.

An employee who answered the phone at the Mercer Hotel in SoHo said he was unaware of the incident.

Crowe won the Academy Award for best actor for "Gladiator" in 2001.

Decaprio? He'd get creamed by that kid who played Napoleon Dynamite too. (Ashamed to say I watched that.) I'm a Gary Oldman fan btw, but I don't think he'd fit the bill either for Cinderella Man

"Finding Neverland was a very moving story."

Yeah, it was, but the actual story it was based upon was not at all what was portrayed. A couple of real life spoilers: (Right click your mouse over the space below to see them if you wish.)

I detest it when Hollywood glorifies people like Barrie.

Drudge has an updated version of the story which reads in part:

"The Australian movie star was arraigned on charges of second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon - the telephone - before Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Martin Murphy."

Comment:

How does having a telephone add up to criminal possession of a weapon?!?! (have we all gone nuts?)

DeNiro used to be great, but is now a caricature of himself.
And has that expression of "chronic constipation"!

This is exactly the type of thing that keeps me from becoming a full fledged RC fan.

The attack occurred shortly after 4 a.m. in the lobby of the Mercer Hotel, the police said. Mr. Crowe was staying in a $3,000-a-day suite there and, unable to place a call to his wife in Australia, went to the lobby and threw the telephone at an employee behind the desk, cutting him below the right eye, the police said.

($nip)

The police arrived at the hotel at 4:21 a.m. and found Mr. Crowe both sober and cooperative, ...

($nip)

Mr. Crowe's publicist, Robin Baum, issued a statement denying that the actor had hit anyone: "After asking the front desk several times to replace a faulty phone in his room - and getting only attitude from the clerk on duty - Crowe brought the phone down to the front desk in an effort to address the situation in person. Words were exchanged and Crowe wound up throwing the phone against the wall. He regrets that he lost his temper, but at no time did he assault anyone or touch any hotel employee."

The criminal complaint stated that Mr. Crowe "admitted that he picked up the phone and threw it at informant because he was angry."

The employee was identified as Nestor Estrada, 28, of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. He spent the afternoon in seclusion in his apartment, decidedly less glamorous than the actor's room, with its broken buzzer and peeling paint and tin shingles painted to look like wood.

Crowe is a modern day Oliver Reed, an OK actor on the rare occasions when he is sober.

Come to think of it, Reed's last film was Gladiator.
