My Mamma Always Told Me...
myself | 6/2/05 | peacebaby

Forrest Gump's mother told him: "Life is like a box of chocolates... ." My own mother told me: "Honey child, there's a thin line between love and hate." What words of wisdom did your mother or loved one impress upon you? Anyone?

Mom always said, in regard to human nature:
The hair on a wolf grows in one direction ~ no matter how you try to comb it differently, it will still grow in that same direction.

Dad always said in regard to just about everything:
Do as I say, not as I do.

just talked with my own mother who gave mer her most favorite saying, and I thought ya'll would like it:

A bell is no bell until you ring it,
A song is no song until you sing it,
And love is not love until you give it away.

Rogers & Hammerstein "South Pacific" (mom thinks.)

Similar to your wolf analogy....

I was always told that a "Leopard never changes his spots - he just rearranges them..."

That's why I didn't marry that first guy....

isn't it great? We should remember it.

Come to think of it though, mama did tell me (when I was having marital probs) that "there's a fine line between love and hate."

She didnt approve of my choice to marry my husband 25 years ago (whom I'm still with).

So now mama says "Love is not love until you give it away.)

Well, I gave away my love to my present husband, and it hasn't been easy, I'll say, 'cause I do know there's a fine line between love and hate.

Mama said there'd be days like this. But why are there so many of them?

My mother used to say "Make me another Gin and Tonic ya Jackass!"

Good times.

I'm lucky enough to have what I call my "other mother" who has been much more influential than they original. She is more worldly and more like me - and has great wisdom to share.

She is just a few years older than the original version - but has more energy, less fear and more sense of adventure than nearly anyone I know - except me, of course. The two of us have traveled the world together.

One of my favorite quotes from her - "Sometimes we don't understand everything we know!" When you travel - this comes up a lot!

And of course, "Don't forget to practice your flirting!" Which I do - often.

;-)

Honey, sens you was up, git me a beer!

I love that one: Sometimes we don't understand what we already know.

lol - I wish I had learned to take my moms advise before I married my first husband! It would have spared me a lot of trouble and grief.

On the other hand, there was another thing mom always told me that I did learned well and have never gotten:
"It doesn't matter who "started it", you are going to get into the same amount of trouble for fighting ... so, if you are going to fight, be sure to get your licks in and fight to win!"

My dad taught me that.....fight to win. I always did.

Another one I learned years ago...when you are arguing about something that doesn't matter...

"Would you rather be right or happy?"

speaking of arguing, I now tell my daughter: You're gonna be a lawyer one day, you argue so well.

You are a good mom... build her up... in everything she does.

Even if it's arguing!

build up her arguing.....you gotta be kidding?

:~)

And to my husband, I say: You can avoid a subject better than a witness.

He shoulda been a lawyer, too.

Actually, I believe in turning everything into a positive for a child.

Maybe I've gone too far with arguing but - well, you know what I mean.
