The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Most of it is a bit too saucey...didn't jell like I would like, but it's still quite edible.

It is pretty, huh? That reddish color is because of the skins being pureed up in it.

We're weighing them this weekend. I don't think they're quite the size I want, but maybe. One is awfully close. Likely be next weekend before we butcher them, because of the smaller one.

Oh yeah, this would be perfect for that! It really is almost like a syrup! (Thicker, though.)

Hehehehe....My Mom wanted me to can some peaches once, so I did. They sat on the counter for a grand total of 2 days before she opened and used all of them.

A wake-up call from Luke's jets

Jun. 23, 2005 12:00 AM

"Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the
morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight
formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall,
continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our
good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call,
or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird
special? Any response would be appreciated."

The response:
Quote:

Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday):

On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship of F-16s
from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the
grave of Capt Jeremy Fresques. Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer
who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in
Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day. At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and
friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss
of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of
the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the
21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents
of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the
president of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and
women who understand the sacrifices they have endured. A four-ship flyby
is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give their lives
in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs
seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four
officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects. The letter writer
asks, "Whom do we thank for the morning air show?" The 56th Fighter Wing
will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of
Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that
my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Lt. Col. Scott Pleus, CO
63rd Fighter Squadron Luke Air Force Base

Hey, what are you doin' here this time of day!?!? Did you have to work a double-shift or something?

Glad to see you, BTW, and thanks for the support! I sure hope, though, that you're not stuck working during the day today!

themeatbirds actually "feel" like the chickens in the grocery store! It's funny to reach down and grab one and it feels nothing like the hens feel...they feel heavy, and meaty!!

They're real...wide! Vey different from the hens.

We wondered what in our yard was so tasty for them. Clare had seen some little red bugs on the lamb's ears that have grown so tall they're sprouting yellow flowers at the tops! They were pecking away at them, so that must be it. They were also pulling on the tops of long grasses, so maybe they were going for the seeds there.

They came back again this afternoon. I saw the Mama, and wondered there the babies were, then I heard them chirping. They were behind the mound of dirt. I waited for a bit, then they both came out and I got some more pictures. Have to wait for SSQ to get home, though, cause I'm not familiar with the downloading operations of the camera we got at Christmas. Guess I haven't taken that many pictures, so I haven't needed to do that particular operation.

It's raining now, so they've gone back into the woods. I think it's cool that our backyard is so friendly for critters.
