The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I really, really miss him. And Margaret. The rest too, of course...but especially those two.

Well, I'm just back from a nice walk...went to the other natural foods store; the one other than Whole Foods. There's a nice way to get there that doesn't involve main roads.

Only...I was there and had a bottle of kefir in hand when I realized I'd left my debit card in the back pocket of the pants I wore yesterday. *sigh* So I had to put it back and walk back without.

If it wasn't already getting hot, I'd ride my bike back over and get it...wear a backpack so I could carry it. But I think I'm too lazy.

OT - the cart is loaded and the pony is jingling his harness, anxious to gone. And so we are.

Any way they can be persuaded to join you in Ft. Collins?

Permanently? Probably not. Margaret's still working on learning violins - she finished her first (which Dad is trying to buy from her, but she won't sell...;-) and is working on a second. And Stephen's still too young. And we do love that part of the country, despite its faults! I'm almost as homesick for that as I am for my family, even though it's beautiful here. I imagine I'll feel more at home here in the future, but for right now, I miss northwestern NH badly.

They do want to visit at some point, though, both of them. Maybe even for a fairly long time, to do a bunch of hiking and kayaking. Dunno how that'd work out. We'll see.

Heh. At least I'm getting the cookies at work and not bringing (or making) them at home. Ice cream, however, is a different story.

Phew! The pie is out, the house relatively spiffed, and the food mostly prepped. Guess I got it all in in the nick of time.

Got another email this AM...
Hello,

My name is Sgt. Gabrial [name redacted]. I'm part of the [unit redacted] out of Louisiana. That should tell you all you need to know, haha.

Well as you probably already know I'm currently serving in Iraq. I have heard nothing but good things from my guys about you people. I guess there is no need in beating around the bush.

I would like to express interest in some of your products. The first being the "Tactool". Being one of the larger guys in the platoon I am called upon to "breach" quite a few doors. Sure we have tools for the platoon but we work on a strict timetable, meaning I may not have time to wait. I feel that your tool would be extremely useful in those situations.

Secondly I must say that the "Campanion" is a very nice looking blade and would draw a lot of attention hanging from my combat vest. Those two items would really be appreciated and used if put in my possesion. Now I'd be lieing if I said that I wouldn't like to own a state of the art fighting knife like the CQB1SG and what soldier would be complete without a good folding knife, haha.

Beyond the favors that I have asked of you I would truly like to say thank you for all that you do. It really means alot to a soldier when others get involved. There are a lot of people from the states who claim to "support the troops" but there are few groups who actually do anything to back that up. Coming from an NCO I know it takes sacrafices to "take care of your men". Sometimes they aren't big sacrafices but you still have to do without in order to make sure they are taken care of as best as possible. In my eyes this group is doing a great job of taking care of us so again I say thanks.

Last little bit I promise. You all have done so much for us, is there anything we can do for you? If you can think of any task just let me know and I'll personally do all that I can to make sure it happens.

Thanks,

Sgt. Gabrial out
By the way, I have set up a Donation information page that includes a direct Paypal link that makes it easy to send $$ to Winmag.

The 2nd package just arrived (took a while this time, because I was never home when the mailman arrived & ended up having to sign a slip saying "Just leave the darn thing in the door! It's okay, really!".....or words to that effect.;^)

Anyway........thank you so much, once again. When my son gets home from work I'll give it to him and I'm sure he will be sending his personal thanks at that time.:)

Very cool.... I had to go look at the hobbit hole blog to see the tactool he wants!

Winmag, have you received recent donations from everyone stemming from our latest batch of troop requests and appeals for funds? No one responded to me so I can't tell. I really think all this response is neat, and I think everyone takes pride in this project. I hope you get the help you need too, so you aren't carrying the whole load here.

From the latest letter:

It really means alot to a soldier when others get involved. There are a lot of people from the states who claim to "support the troops" but there are few groups who actually do anything to back that up.

Are all of us doing all we can?

Bah.

Ok, what's fun to do, doesn't cost money, and won't result in heatstroke?
