The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah, but I can pat my head and rub my stomach at the same time, so there.

Good evening. I hope you are having a blessed day what is left of it. I read The Hobbit and am almost halfway through Fellowship of the Ring and now I understand where all the thread titles come from ;o)

Ah - did you recognize some of the lines?

We started out just using nice 'sound bite' lines from the books, in willy nilly order according to mood.

The last several now, I've been going line by line through the poem at the top of the thread. It ends with the part of the verse Pippin sang in RoTK.

SO how do you like the books? Any comments/observations/questions/reviews?

That's a good strategy, there's so much detail, that to try to really study it on the first time through would bog you down. There's enough information to read it at a pleasurable pace and still find something new in it a second, third, fourth, and fifth time through it.

I assume you've seen all the movies. Do you think that helps or hinders reading the books the first time?

I've not seen the movies yet. I wanted to read the book through twice or three times before I watch the trilogy.

Yup. I found some homeschooling study guides for LOTR. I have it all figured out already, the whole allegory thing. Awesome set of books.
