This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Good Grief. That is disgusting. Mabe it all depends on who runs the show. In Lassen County in California, the county I used to live...you never saw anyone but the rich people's brats win shows, and they were NEVER any good.
Algae? I haven't heard about it... is it on the South East or Northeast coast?
I think she will show signs just fine when exposed to a stallion. The stallion owner will handle all the breeding so you don't have to worry about that. A vet check when you get ready to do this will tell you approx. where she is in her cycle.
Nope but I will try to get some taken this weekend and post them. They are home made.
Texas is great!!! You really need to move here. Kentucky is another great state because of all the horses too.
Well, I am going to go out for awhile. See you guys later. I hope no planes crash while I am gone!
Good morning, welcome.
:) I know it goes against the grain Hair, but horses are much happier if they can come and go at will and 90% would rather brave the elements than be in a barn listening to the noise and unable to run away from it.
Oh - I agree they'd typically like to have freedom to come and go..... But it seems protecting them from severe storms is why we build barns.... I can't imagine locking them outside in a hurricane.
Oh I love Kentucky. That's another state that I would consider moving to.
Good morning!
Question for you riders.. what is the name of a pad that you can attach to the top of your saddle, for you to sit on if your tail bone can't take the seat for very long? I borrowed one last week and it helped a lot. I'm looking around online to buy one, but I don't know what it's called. Looking up "saddle pad" gets you a variety of gear that goes under the saddle.
The mare that I ride is a QH and she tends to carry her head neck lower, and stretch her neck out when she's relaxed. Her nose doesn't drag, but she does tend to carry her head and neck lower. I'll have to get pictures Of course I can hardly ever get her to relax, so we'll see how that goes. Yesterday she thought that it would be a great hoot to carry her head WAY up in the air so that she could spook at everything. She hasn't done that to me in a while, so I was surprised.
Sheepskin? There's these:

Generally they are smart enough to pick the safest place depending on the weather.
We'd always love to see pics!
I know they have a naturally lower neck carriage than the more upright breeds, but in a hunter, being overly heavy on the forehand should be a fault.
It's a saddle saver.
Agreed. I close the mares in because i don't have individual paddocks off the barn. But Bay comes and goes as he pleases.
