Windows computer servers tie with Unix in revenue
The worldwide computer server market grew 5.3 per cent to $12.1 billion in the first quarter, with revenue for servers running the Microsoft Corp Windows operating system equalling that of Unix servers for the first time, market research firm IDC said on Friday.
Revenue for Windows servers grew 12.3 per cent to $4.2 billion in the quarter while unit shipments grew 10.7 per cent. Unix servers saw 2.8 per cent revenue growth to $4.2 billion while unit shipments increased 5 per cent.
"The equal level of spending in both segments this quarter showed that Windows servers are gaining traction in the enterprise server space with a combination of deeper investment and richer configurations," said Jean Bozman, vice president of Enterprise Computing.
IDC said that overall server revenue grew for the eighth consecutive quarter as customers invest further in new infrastructure.

So now microsoft was making freeware clones... I knew there was a reason I did not like them..
Which version of fedora? I really liked gnome but find its a bit clunkish..
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
First paragraph of the article you linked:
Linux potentially infringes 283 patents, including 27 held by Microsoft but none that have been validated by court judgments, according to a group that sells insurance to protect those using or selling Linux against intellectual-property litigation.
Hardly an unbiased source, Eagle.
People don't run benchmarks, people don't gameplay benchmarks, people don't write reports with benchmarks. They run applications like P'shop, Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Quicktime-related players, games, and so forth. They want to see how fast those things run.
How do you define 'heavily optimized'? If an application is compiled for a particular processor, do you think that the 'tested' apps would be more-heavily 'optimized' than the versions sold on the street? Not sensible.
As you can tell from my posts I'd sure like to see Apple gaining share instead of Linux, but the numbers just don't bear it out. According to my link in post 29:
"Even with chip shortages from IBM that are holding down sales of its Xserve machines, Apple Computer Inc is the number five RISC/Unix vendor by box count, with 7,736 boxes sold. But with only $41.4m in sales, it is not in the top 10 when ranked by sales."
Well you obviously didn't learn from that mistake, and are now peddling fake freeware harder than ever.
Fake freware is fake freware right? Microsoft through their fake freeware tried to damage a US company, putting Amiericans out of work... I guess you hate them too right??
I didn't like it at the time, but they've paid for those mistakes and are no longer shipping their fake Java. Linux is the ultimate in fake freeware that's out there on the market today, and rather than conform to the laws of this country, they want those laws overturned. I'm consistent, you're not.
Only because the courts stepped in, the a responsible company to be behind right GE?
Linux is the ultimate in fake freeware that's out there on the market today,
Funny I drop more than 10 grand a year on licenses, freeware you say? Still its not like Linux has tried to break existing standards to hurt others (like MS and Java)..
and rather than conform to the laws of this country, they want those laws overturned.
Alot of guys on all sides want IP laws changed. I think patents are ok but for software the patent term needs to be greatly reduced, I know many OSS guys who feel the same way. Of course youll ignore my opinion and post some out there commie in a sad attempt to call me one.
I'm consistent, you're not.
You support a company that broke the law and licensing agreement in order to damager another American company, yea real consistent..
You must need support, otherwise, you should be able to get the software for free. And I've heard you say right on this forum you don't pay for every single copy you run.

There's a lot of things about Microsoft I don't like, or didn't like at the time, your efforts to pigeonhole me as a full time supporter of them notwithstanding. I've made my position clear, I support all US proprietary software vendors when compared to fakes like Linux originating from overseas and now given away for free to damage our markets. Extremely simple, yet somehow beyond your comprehension.
In my office I pay for every last one, just like I pay for support on windows boxes. Penny wise is pound foolish in that regard, I almost never have to use the support but in the one or two cases I have its been real nice.
I more pay for RedHtas overall service (which includes support) but also rhn which is a sweet management system. The only copy I dont pay for is the Fedora desktop/server I run at home..

Hey there is a reason I use RedHat and not Suse, I support American companies and if not for Linux RedHat would not even exist! Say what you want about evil opensource users generally I use it because it works better.
Research before writing. Microsoft had the cheaper bid in the end by dipping into their fund to give a 35% price cut, and threw in millions of dollars of free training and support, plus cost-saving license concessions. Munich still went with IBM, although that bid was only slightly less than Microsoft's original bid.
Munich Linux migration hits serious snags
Migration problems aren't just because of the OS. Look at the EDS NMCI contract. It's all basically just a Windows upgrade, yet it's totally screwed.
well said.
"Which version of fedora?"
The latest version that Redhat is serving.
so youre running FC4T3 then?
I have no idea what the number is. I haven't had a reason to even look at it. I installed it to update from Redhat 9 and it works great for OpenOffice, Firefox and email. That's all I use it for. I use the WinXP machine for graphics and business apps.
If I need to learn the version number of my operating system, I figure it's not doing its job.
As with gun laws, all that's required is to enforce existing laws and regulations. I've been in government purchasing, and you're supposed to find the lowest-cost product that fits your needs. Windows doesn't always fit the bill. However, when purchasing, government employees tailor the requests so that only Windows will fit the bill, even if the Windows-only attribute they found is something completely unrelated to the system's ability to perform that function it's being ordered for. In large part, the government uses Windows because that's what they know, not for any cost/performance reason, and such waste has to be stopped just like any other waste.
By far, socialist and communist countries tend to ride bicycles more than non-socialist countries. Therefore, we should all stop riding bicycles. And the Chinese prefer the color red, which is also generally symbolic of communism, so I'd better get rid of my red car.
