Gas Grill vs Charcoal Grill
self

Posted on 05/18/2005 3:24:12 PM PDT by hsmomx3

We've been looking to possibly replace our charcoal grill with a gas grill.

The only thing that is holding my husband back is possibly not getting that same charcoal/grill flavor that you would get when cooking over charcoal.

Can anyone tell me if there is any way you can achieve this type flavor when cooking on a gas grill.

Thanks!!

I bought a combo grill.

You use a gas burner to light the coals...then shut the gas off

No Honest! they are available

"Gas grills are easier, charcoal tastes better."

Exactly. When I'm doing some serious grilling, I go charcoal. When the friends and family are over, I do propane.

I'm seriously looking into a brick oven for pizzas, chickens, etc., but man, the cost. It's the add-ons that will kill you.

I switched to using real wood and nothing compares to it. I was using a regular grill, but quit charcoal after having tried real wood chunks one time. I can't use charcoal anymore; everything tastes like tar compared to real wood. Another reason I switched was when I watched the food channel show that showed Kingsford making their briquettes out of aspen - hence the tar I imagine.

Having said that, I did just buy a gas grill. I use wood smoking chips in it and I get the flavor of wood with the convenience of gas. It's not quite up to par with a regular wood fire, but it's close and IMO much better tasting than charcoal.

I have a Broil King on the deck with a small Weber for charcoal on the patio. I also have a Weber smoker that I run with good charcoal and apple wood chunks for smoking.

The Broil King can be made to cook about anything...rotating spit...ceramic grid...searing hot or smoking with one burner only. I does a fine job on nice thick steaks or hamburgers.

Buy a flame resistant pad for below any barbecue on a deck and have a fire extinguisher handy. Decks burn real fast.

As I run the Broil King hot for searing steaks, I get little "gas grill taste". For smoking, you must brine or marinate to get the meat to take on the taste and you must have true wood smoke.

In Kansas City, you don't want to embarrass yourself with poor barbecue or grilled dinners and I rarely have with this combination of two inexpensive webers and a fairly pricey Broil King.

My husband does not have time to get on the computer so I am the one who asks the questions. He leaves for work at 9AM and does not arrive home until after 8:30PM.

The last thing he wants to do when he gets home is surf the internet.

And yes he does have a mind of his own and he is the head of our house but I am the one who does research and report back to him.

OK, you asked.......

Charcoal is better but gas is easier.

I cooked on a charcoal grill with smoker capabilities for years. It can produce some scrumptious food.

I bought a medium price gas grill to replace on older one nd it doesn't seem to do a very good job. I'm not happy at all but too lazy to replace it.

My son cooks on a gas grill almost every night and does an excellant job. A few minutes and chicken breasts are flavorfully done. The charcoal would not even be hot by the time it's done. He motivatred me to try it again and I put in the ceramic bricks and it seems improved.

Get yourself one of these: Brinkmann Trailmaster

You'll barbecue better than you have a right to. Mine works like a dream. Weighs about 150 pounds, though.

screw the grill, go to Woody's, Sonny's or Smokey Bones. If you need this kind of advice you probably can't kook anyway...

As you know charcoal is the best if you have the time. As for gas grills Weber is by far the best and I'll tell you why. I bought this grill 6 years ago and have used it almost every day with no problems. It has spent every day of its life outside without a cover, the igniter still works and nothing has had to be replaced except for the grease tray. It still heats nice and evenly. You can get the base model (which is what I have) for about $400.
