Question about my new iPod

My husband gave me an iPod mini for Mother's Day, basically so that he can have our bigger one all to himself. I was told by a few people that I can't download songs that I've already purchased and put on my old iPod onto my new iPod. Is this true?

I am pretty clueless, but I do know that they are equipped with some sort of anti-pirating software. I don't want to mess up either iPod, so I'm looking for some advice. Can I plug my new mini into the same computer as my old one and then download my purchased music onto it? Anything I should know or any tips would be appreciated. Sorry if this seems like a simple/lame question, but as I said, I am pretty clueless. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you should just be able to plug in the iPod to the computer your music is on. It should work like normal. Shouldn't be a problem. :)

My understanding is that iPods only work in concert with "iTunes" on your PC. You download music from the "iTunes" store, and then transfer the downloaded music from your iTunes library to your iPod. But first you need to program or set-up your iPod -- it will only recognize your PC (meaning that you cannot transfer music from another's computer, only your own).

If the iTunes application isn't allowing a second iPod to be programmed to the computer you're using, 1) call Apple, and if that doesn't work 2) return the iPod. (I would guess, however, that Apple allows more than one iPod to register with a single PC -- bad marketing decision if they don't.)

One other thing: It might be that your PC isn't reading your iPod -- this happened to me when I tried to program my Mini. The problem wasn't with the software or the computer, but with the fire-wire connection between the computer and the iPod. My son, who worked at CompUSA, said that faulty fire-wires were the #1 complaint from new iPod owners. Use the fire-wire from your other iPod, and see if that works.

What he said.

The music is registered to your *computer*, not your iPod. You can put the music on as many iPods as you want.

One other note - an iPod cannot contain music from two computers. If you switch computers, the old music on the iPod is replaced. However, up to five computers can be authorized to share music purchased from ITMS, so that can provide some flexibility.

Wrong, your iPod can contain music from as many computers as you want. However, you cannot have it automatically sync to more than one. If you are willing to manage it manually (i.e., drag songs from the Library list to the iPod icon in iTunes), then you can connect it to as many computers as you wish.

It's in the preferences. Connect your iPod to the new computer. iTunes will pop up a dialog box that says (in effect) that this iPod contains the music library from another computer and would you like to sync it with this one? Click NO, and then go into Preferences (under the Edit menu on Windows, under the iTunes menu on Mac). Click the iPod tab (Windows) or icon (Mac) in the Preferences window that appears. Click the button to "Manage music manually" (or similar - I forget the exact wording, but it will be the bottom radio button in the window. Click OK and close the window. You can now use your iPod with as many computers as you so desire.

It takes more time to describe it than it takes to do it.

That's correct, thanks for the clarification.
