Howie Carr was discussing the fact that Kraft is in the process of changing OREO cookies, I could not believe it; they are releasing it this fall. They are going to remove trans fat from the recipe! There is only one thing, according to Kraft, the trans fat gives the cookie it's distinct flavor and firmness/texture. That's right folks, the very thing that makes Oreos, Oreos is being removed. Why? Well, I wrote a letter to Kraft and they told me in the following response from Kraft:

Thanks for visiting our website!
As part of Kraft's overall Health and Wellness initiatives, we are working to improve the nutrition profile of our product portfolio. This includes a major effort to reduce or, wherever possible, eliminate trans fat from our products, while continuing to meet expectations for taste and quality.
Where possible, we are doing this without increasing the combined amount of saturated fat plus trans fat in our products. We now have a recipe identified for our original Oreo that contains 0 grams trans fat per serving and plan to introduce this in the United States by year-end.
In addition to our many reduced-fat and fat-free products, we offer a number of products that contain 0 g of trans fat per serving (as defined by the FDA, see below), including cookies, crackers, snacks, cereals, beverages, candy, and meat alternatives.

My Response:
Dear Ms. Kim McMiller,
In your misguided attempt to change the "nutrition profile" of your product portfolio, you are in the process of changing Oreo Cookies, the only decent manufactured cookie in the entire country. I guarantee you I and millions of other Oreo customers are going to stop buying your product and actively fight against this misguided attempt to mess with the original formula. Coke lost MILLIONS of dollars and millions of customers over "New Coke" and Kraft is about to make the same mistake with "New Oreo's" aka "New Coke 2".
The people behind "New Coke" lost their jobs and it took years for Coke to rebuild it's disenfranchised customer base. You are in the process of making the very same mistake. Your misguided attempt is destined to meet with failure, it is already being discussed on talk radio (Howie Carr WRKO, Boston) and everyone calling in was disgusted and said they were no longer going to buy Oreo's. My extended family and I are among them and you are about to hear from millions of customers just like us.
A disenfranchised/former Oreo/Kraft customer actively involved in boycotting "New Oreo's",

Freepers, if you love Oreo's and do not want the PC crowd to tell you what to eat, I would advise as many FR people as possible to call and write Ms.Kim McMiller, Associate Director, Consumer Relations Kraft Foods, and let her know what you think of "New Oreos".
Time to let Kraft know how you feel; call 1-800-323-0768
My family and I will boycott.
Hydrox are not the same kind of cookie ~ not even in the same class.
The original formula contained LARD - a naturally occurring saturated fat that makes wonderful cookies and is nutritionally superior to the artificial hydrogenated oils they currently use. The change to the trans-fat-laden hydrogenated oils is because the P.C. nutritionists thought any veggie oil was "better" than any animal fat. They were wrong.
So I'm with you on sticking with the *original* recipe.
A kinda-sorta Dr. Price ping
Hm, sounds like oreo ice cream. *LOL*
(Randomish thought: I have a friend who really likes limp, greasy french fries. Then again, he is probably in the minority.)
Oreo's vs Hydrox.
Twenty years from now being able to eat real Oreos will be more important than on what day a terrorist is captured!
They bent to the Trial Lawyers.
A few years ago, the TLA had a conference in Massachusetts. They were planning the junk food shake down.
Kraft first to fall?
Kraft in their infinite wisdom is not going to give us Oreo consumers an option; it is "New Oreos" or nothing!
Don't you just love it, they are going to screw with the original recipe, remove real Oreo's from the market and give us ersatz Oreos in their place.
Funny you should post this. I went to Arby's today and I SWEAR the Arby's sauce is NOT THE SAME! It tasted way sweeter with no tang.
Ruined my whole Friday!! :)
I hate change.
>>>What I'd like to know is where Kraft is testmarketing their new low carb Oreos.
Hopefully on the Trial Lawyers.
Anyone who likes Hydrox is a freak! ;-)
Ding, Ding Ding, we have a winner! Give that man a Cupie Doll!
LoL.
Well, there's NO comparison. And any SANE person knows that! ((now where's my milk?))
Ding, Ding Ding, we have anaother winner! Give that man a Cupie Doll!
"Since when were cookies supposed to be a source of nutrition?"
My 17 year old would vehemently disagree with you!!!

Oreo Cookies
COOKIE WAFERS:
1 (18.25 oz) box Dark Fudge Cake Mix
1/3 cup water
2 tablespoons shortening
CREME FILLING:
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup shortening (no substitution)
3 tablespoons hot water
Preheat oven to 325F. Blend all ingredients; then knead with your hands until it is pliable like dough. Form dough into 3/4 inch balls and press flat, 1/2 inch apart on greased cookie sheets. Bottom of a glass works nice for this. Bake 4 to 6 minutes or until cookies are crunchy. I should think you could refrigerate the dough in cylinder shaped rolls for a couple of hours and slice 1/8 inch thick, as well.
Let cookies cool on sheets.
Combine filling ingredients and mix well. Form into balls about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter, again using your hands. Sandwich one filling in the center of two cookies and carefully press down until the filling spreads almost to the edge.
Makes 2 dozen cookies (4 dozen wafers)

According to this, the lo carb Oreos have been discontinued.
