FReeper dog lovers, this little male Chihuahua mix (about 15 lbs.) desperately needs either a good, loving home or a foster home until I can find him a permanent situation.
On Good Friday evening, I spotted this little guy in a blind panic at a very busy intersection in the city of Gardena, CA, a Los Angeles suburb. He paused a moment, then took off running down Gardena Blvd. I made a U-turn and did everything possible to try to catch up to and get ahead of him in an effort to save him. But he kept going.
He turned north on an ever bigger, busier street and kept running. In all, he easily ran at least two miles from where I first saw him. Finally, he ran into a major intersection that feeds to and from the Harbor Freeway. The traffic made him pause a moment, then he tried running with the traffic and got clipped by a car. (Fortunately, he was not hurt severely; just a skinned patch on his forehead.)
As luck (or God) would have it, there was a police car crossing in the direction the dog went. Either the cop car or the one in front of the cops hit the dog. Because the cops stopped, all traffic stopped. Otherwise traffic would have just kept going, and the little guy would have been hit multiple times.
I had parked about a block away and went running over to find this little dog flopping around in the street with a male and a female cop standing over him seeming to not know what to do. I immediately scooped the little fellow up and told the cops where I first saw him. They asked, "Can you take care of it?"
So they brought me back to my car. Although it was about 7:30pm, I just took a blind shot and brought him to the nearest animal shelter where I happen to know one of the officers. Again, as luck (or God) would have it, this officer had not yet gone home. He arranged for vet care over the weekend and then picked the little dog up Monday. The dog has been in the pound ever since.
Continuing the story down below...
I hear that. I live with a lady who rescues doggs, cats and horses. We don't have any horses in the house, but we have eight doggs and three cats in a 900 square foot bungalow. It's like having another part time job taking all the doggs out. :-) We have two Mastiff mixes, two black labs, a golden, a Sheltie, a schnauzer (sp?) and a daschund (sp?).
She has 22 rescued horses at her barn, too. (One is mine, he has COPD and I bought him cuz he was on his way to the auction.)
I am in Penna and have cats, but I'll send a check to help with some expenses, for the little guy...
That's why I was calling your attention to Sean's post - Sean will take him.
Awww, although he's not a real dog, I wish I lived closer to you and could help you out. Thanks, for looking after him.
It looks like you have a few offers for homes, so I hope one works out.
In case they don't, a few more suggestions:
I second another FReeper's suggestion of listing on http://www.petfinder.org
Have you tried the Los Angeles http://www.craigslist.org to see if you can find a home?
Here (in northern California) shelters have very high demand for small dogs for adoption, so looking into shelters outside of your immediate area may find one that could easily place him.
Thank you for all you are doing to help this little dog. You are an angel for him.
LOL! I know what you mean. I've always had bigger dogs, myself, until I rescued a tiny Cairn terrier mix in 1998. I kept the little dude (I named him Peanut) -- lived in a larger place then. He had all sorts of problems. Congenital hole in his heart, fractures of one leg and his pelvis, skin problems. But I got him well and kept him until he died just this past February. That bad heart of his finally gave out.
Cute little dog bump from GA
Four cats, sink? Are they all indoors?
We keep all our cats indoors. I have had terrible territorial problems (marking - ugh) with males not in the same family. We finally had to seperate them. You ever have that problem?
If you find no place for this little guy, contact Perfect Pet Rescue in Culver City, CA. I think they are on the web.
I can not take in any more dogs myself at the moment, but this is a no-kill shelter, and I'll be glad to pitch in some cash to help them out with him.

A new 60ish single former missionary-to-the-Navajos now attending our church is caring for 24 dogs from the Navajo reservation. She's on limited income and it's understandably stretching her but she is loathe to have any of them put to sleep.
If anyone wants to adopt one or otherwise help her out in the North West New Mexico region, please let me know.
Blessings,
I'll happily take the little guy, provided that a) You can get him to Myrtle Beach, and b) He doesn't mind sharing a house with a megalomaniacal Jack Russell Terrier and drama-queen kitty, but it looks like I'll have to stand in line.

Kitty Ping List / Not-A-Ping-List joint alert!
[Freepmail me to get on or off either list.]
Hello. This is my first post on Free Republic. I have been lurking for a while but I could not let this one pass.
A year and a half ago I adopted an Italian Greyhound from the rescue group. Your little dog looks like he might be a mix of IG and Chihuahua and his picture really tugged at my heart.
I know that a couple of people have offered to adopt your puppy but if none of them work out please let me know. I would be happy to take him in.

I suggested this on a similar thread about a cat a while back.
If you have to place the little guy in a home far away, consider a "Freeper chain" for transport.
Arrange to have freepers who live along the route from point A to point B do a relay with him, with each one driving the little guy 50 or 100 miles to hand him off to the next Freeper on the route. Along the way he could spend the night at a few Freeper homes. It would be much more pleasant for him than being crated up and shipped.
Good luck.
Please keep us posted on the outcome.
Best of luck to you and the little guy.
I'm a dog groomer, former vet tech, in Southern Oregon. Not sure if I could keep him, but at the very least I can foster him. At work I'm known as "the most patient groomer EVER" I've had two other chi's like him and really miss having a lap dog. My dog is a 170lbs Caucasion Ovcharka. Very gentle but way too big for my lap! I'm not real certain that he's not a purebred. He looks like a good representative of a Deer Chihuahua. Longer legs, sleeker lines.
I notice you have gotten a few offers to take the little fella. If none of those work out, my son & his wife will take him. They live in Perris, CA.
