For over a decade Ive tried to convince people in the pro-life movement that leaving the Republican Party wasnt a good move. The past few days has changed my mind, and I started to write this article when the news broke that Terri died.
Florida has shown us that the best that the GOP has to offer is a losing strategy.
For decades abortion has remained legal due to the same problems which were present in Florida: an arrogant judiciary and an unwilling executive branch.
The call for Jeb to refuse to enforce the illicit orders of Judge Greer went unheeded. As a direct result, Jebs actions sanctioned the starvation of Terri Schiavo. His Pontius Pilate approach to saving her life hasnt fooled the pro-life base.
His public denial that there wasnt anything more he could do was a slap in the face to the pro-life movement and to Terris parents. It is well known that he indeed had these ORDINARY powers as the Governor of the State of Florida.
If this is the strategy the GOP has to reign in the Judiciary, then its time to find another party. It is simply not acceptable that someone could be starved to death in the United States of America with legal sanction.
But where does one go? Many of the alternative parties are too idealistic or too focused on history to reach a broad spectrum of people. And some of the names are quite silly .
In my mind, an ideal third party candidate would appeal to socially conservative Republicans, Regan democrats, and minorities. A coalition party can indeed win
What are your thoughts?
Keep the GOP...Nuke Florida.
They refused to renew the AWB. What are you talking about?
Look up Article I Section 2 of the Constitution of Florida -- the rulings were in violation of this section and therefore illicit....
You have the power as an ordinary citizen, you claim Jeb has the power as Governor. He failed to act on his power and you criticize - you fail to act on yours and you expect what? Forgiveness? Kudos? Explain how you are not a hypocrite?
A third party seems inevitable at some point, and I have to admit as time goes on I find less and less to identify with in the Republican party. Though I will never vote Democrat, there is a gap here the Repubs are not addressing.
If you think Hugh Hewit calling those who want a return to a check and balance system on the judiciary "nuts" is very helpful to the cause of building a coalition, then we have some serious talking to do. The fact is that Hugh Hewitt may claim to value Christian conservatives, but he's personally embarassed they didn't all go to Harvard.
LOL. "We care about limited government and personal freedom, but only somewhat".
I think we have found a new campaign slogan for the Republicans!!!!! LOL
I think it is very telling that the trolls know there is nothing in the democrat party to attract republicans, YET republicans can attract democrat conversions.
The trolls' motives here are transparent.
So...you've sat out all elections since eh...Reagan?
I'm not talking fault. I'm saying that Hitlery would love for a lot of Republicans to jump ship. Is that "Tinfoil" enough for you?
If that's true, then we might as well start packing our bags.
There are many atheists, log-cabin, pro-death and other varieties of republicans
with whom I'd rather not be associated.
The only thing that keeps me in the Republican party is the fact that
it's the only thing out there that can defeat the Democrat party.
The instant a viable alternative appears, I'm out of here.
I'm sure there are millions who feel the same.
You think Perot pulled equally from democrats as well as republicans? He got 19% of the vote. I view him as appealing to more dissatified republicans than to liberals, thus syphoning off more republican votes than democrat.
The end result was a Clinton win at 42%.
... on the steps of the Capital building in Jan 2009. Are you ready for 4 or 8 years of HER?
Dear sinkspur,
"Other than Ross Perot, who gave us Bill Clinton, name one other time."
In the 1850s, there was one party committed to the preservation of the institution of slavery - the Democrats. The opposing party, the Whigs, was not so committed to it, but neither were the Whigs intent on the eventual goal of freedom.
A small third party ran its first presidential candidate in 1856, and lost. I suppose a lot of folks didn't give that party a chance. However, in 1860, that party managed to win the presidency, and managed to win the presidency every election until 1880.
The Whigs disappeared.
It's happened before.

As a lifelong Floridian and one who worked every Bush campaign here in this state whether for SR.,W, or Jeb...Jeb still has my support and vote. He literally did more than I ever imagined he would ever do and people on FR need to get a grip. This has been playing out down here for years and years, Jeb just didn't get involved in this in the last 2 months like a lot of you have.
It is always interesting to see who jumps on and off a bandwagon. I for one am sticking by Jeb. Take your anger out at the polls next time you decide to vote on judge's,take your anger out on Michael. Jeb and President Bush do not deserve to be roasted here.
FL judicial election are "non partisan" Greer comes from a county which is more republican than democrat. It is also worth noting that as a lawyer he would be suspect as being more left than right.
I honestly think that greer allowed the evidence of the recovered memory into the facts because it was felos in front of him.
As for that one judge on the 11th, (not to be confused with clinton appointee whitmore) was defending judicial turf.
One woman said it best on FNC. We have judges applying new math concepts. It does not matter that 2+2=5 as long as you followed the prooooocess you will get credit. The courts were looking at the process.
I also think the federal judges are loath to have to look at these cases. They do not want them on their dockets and thus they rubber stamped Greer.
At the very least, the nuclear option in the senate has become far more likely.
(I do seiously believe civil pardons power should be provided to the Governors just as there are pardons in criminal cases.)
